Suckley Church

Suckley Church This traditional Anglican Church is situated next to the School. A warm welcome awaits you here. Suckley is an ancient place mentioned in the Domesday Book.

There has been a church on this site since early Norman times and many features were retained when the Victorians rebuilt it (such as the large Tub Font dated about 1150-1200 and its 17th century domed cover, the Piscina - which is a 14th century recess in the North Wall of the Chancel used for washing sacred vessels, and the Jacobean pulpit. The old wall tablets were tidied up into the base of th

e bell tower). Outside is a very ancient preaching cross, the base of which is scarred where arrows were sharpened on the stones. The Sanctuary was modernised by the then Diocesan architect, W J Hopkins (1820-1901) much of whose work can be seen in Worcester and whose masterpiece is said to be at Hallow. The beautiful 1571 chalice now, sadly, has to be kept in the bank. The East window shows some of the best stained glass of the day by Kempe, whose wheatsheaf signature can be seen. The fine ring of six bells, cast by the Rudhall foundry at Gloucester in around 1710, is rung regularly. The handsome clock on the tower was installed in 1911 in memory of Mr E H Hill, a local benefactor, whose good deeds include the gift of the village hall to the parish. The clock was repainted and regilded in 2009 by Ivor Bramich.

We were treated to an amazing journey around the universe recently at Harpley Church when Rev Tobias Thornes and Richard Lewis opened our eyes to the beauty and the enormity of the galaxies and nebulae captured using Richard’s telescope in the dark night sky of Suckley.
To set our minds and imagination in the right direction - local Clifton-on-Teme poet Terri Thacker read us this poem she wrote for the occasion:

Night Walk in Starlight
The Sky slips on her velvet cloak of deepest indigo,
and over it she throws a veil of moon-spun tulle,
sparkling with diamonds in their thousands …..
hot blue, cool red, white,
embroidered into convoluted patterns - one vast tapestry of night.

I wonder at this beauty, and with awe, reflect that every jewel’s a mighty sun, Supernovae, Neutrons, Giants, Dwarves, massive, spinning orbs of white-hot gas.
What I can see from Earth as ‘diamond light’
Has travelled eons of time and space to reach my sight.

Asterisms, Constellations, Nebulae, form patterns in a universal void more vast than human mind can comprehend.
My little eyes, with limited, weak sight, see just a splintered fragment of a whole, and only through the magic lens of night.

How small and insignificant am I, and yet, as complex and unique as stars … their essence has created what I am.

Is that the roar of solar winds I hear?
But no …. a sudden veil of cloud obscures all light,
returns me to the owl/screech, fox-bark, hush
of this world’s night.
