Advent is full of doors.

Little cardboard ones
hiding chocolate
or small surprises
counting down the days.

Church doors opening early,
closing late,
holding prayer and candlelight
and the hush before a carol begins.

House doors swinging all day,
people coming and going,
coats piled high,
kettles never quite off the boil.

Revolving doors of parties,
shopping,
forced cheer and full calendars,
in and out,
in and out,
until we forget what we went looking for.

There are heavier doors too.
Hospital doors.
Care home doors.
Doors that close quietly
or slam without warning.
Doors that mark moments
we didn’t plan for
and can’t undo.

Advent doesn’t ignore any of this.
It stands with us on the threshold.
Between what has been
and what’s still to come.

Because this is the season
when God chooses a door.
Not grand.
Not guarded.
A stable door.
A human life.

A door that opens
and spills light into the world.
