With less than a week to go, many of us are praying the Novena to St Cuthbert in preparation for this year's pilgrimage:

THE ANNUAL ST CUTHBERT NOVENA
Friday 28 August to Saturday 5 September 2026

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Great Saint Cuthbert, Apostle of the North of England, we come to ask for your prayers. Pray for me and for the whole Church of Christ. Pray for all those in need this day and especially for those dear to my heart. Through your great and heroic efforts, Christianity has found a home in this land: may it ever be so. You were a man of honour and faith in your own earthly pilgrimage: assist me by your powerful intercession to be an honest servant of Christ. I ask you to pray for this special request if it be God’s holy will:

Fri 28 Aug: For the Church of England, that she may be faithful to Christ in all things

Sat 29 Aug: For the success of the festival to be held one week hence, and for Durham Cathedral and its Chapter

Sun 30 Aug: For Stephen, Bishop of Beverley, and all the parishes of The Society under his care, that under God they may grow and prosper

Mon 31 Aug: For the whole Catholic Movement in the Church of England

Tue 1 Sep: For world peace

Wed 2 Sep: For the poor, lonely, sick, and all the faithful departed

Thu 3 Sep: For all who reject Christ, that they might come to believe

Fri 4 Sep: For an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life in the Church of England

Sat 5 Sep: For the Conversion of England

Finally, say the 'Our Father' and then the following Collect:

O God, who made your name known to us through the Saints of Northern England: by the intercession of Saint Cuthbert, let your Church continue to grow with an increased number of believers. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Many people, young and old, will be returning to schools, colleges and universities this week and in the coming weeks. Please pray for all pupils and staff as the new academic year begins. Pray especially for those for whom the long summer holidays were not peaceful or stable, that the new term may bring comfort, security and stability. +Stephen

Assumpta est Maria in caelum: gaudent Angeli, laudantes benedicunt Dominum, alleluia!

Join us tomorrow at 9am at St John’s and 10.30am at St Peter’s as we celebrate the great feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary! We are delighted to be joined by our bishop, Stephen, who will celebrate both masses and at each bless herbs for the faithful. The 10.30am mass will be followed by a parish BBQ to which all are welcome. Please do come along whichever mass you attend. Contributions of salads and puddings are encouraged - meat, veggie options and drinks will be provided.

Please do pray for our newly formed Fellowship of Vocation which met for the first time tonight. The Fellowship exists to network, support and inform all those who are discerning a possible calling to the priesthood and who want to be associated with our parishes and priests. Many thanks to Frs Morrison, Dixon and Naylor for this work. The Fellowship will meet monthly. Membership is based on a recommendation from a priest of the Hickleton Chapter. Please do pray for the 7 men who joined tonight and for an increase in vocations to the Sacred Priesthood. Diocese of Sheffield See of Beverley
