Woolley church - St Peter's

Woolley church - St Peter's We are a community of believers who welcome everyone. We will be trying to make our church fun to belong to and unbearable to stay away from.

Why not join us on our journey as we become followers of Jesus Christ, develop our faith, our understanding of the bible and discover God’s love and purpose for us? We are a community of believers with a cross section of ages – though for the present the majority of us are getting on a bit. We want to welcome everyone from the elderly to young families and children, those with a growing faith, lit

tle faith or none at all. First Time Visitor to our Sunday Services? We want your visit to be a positive experience so here are some useful things to know -

St Peter's is a beautiful, reasonably warm and well cared for building. Steps or a ramped access lead to the church door. Two steps lead into the church but a portable ramp is available for those who require it. We have people ready to welcome you and to provide you with what you need. Activity packs are available for children to help keep them occupied during the service. A toilet is situated in a building outside of the main church. It is a modern facility, warm and very spacious with baby changing facilities. There is no car park but there is room to park on the roads around the village (please park responsibly)

What do I wear? Just come as you are - whatever you feel comfortable in. What happens in the service? Our services contain a mix of singing praying and, talking. We normally stand to sing and sit to listen to the talking and to pray (the vicar is good at reminding us when to do what). No-one will mind if you cannot or do not wish to stand. We just invite you to join in or listen, sitting or standing and think about the words and why they clearly mean something special to others around you

During the service we also share the peace with one another. We do this by shaking hands We would love you to join in but will understand if you do not wish to. We also go to the altar to either stand or kneel to take communion or to receive a blessing. There are two steps up to the altar and no ramp so the vicar is very happy to bring communion to you if getting to the altar is difficult. Please let the welcome team know before the service begins. We take an offering during our services. It is an OFFERING and you DO NOT have to give anything. Regular attendees of the church are encouraged to tithe and many do so by either cash or direct payments from their banks. After the service we like to talk to one another over tea/coffee and biscuits

Curious to know more, Got questions? We love people that want to know more and ask that questions are saved to the end of the service. We may not be able to answer them immediately, or to your satisfaction but we will try. We plan to have a midweek meeting at the vicarage where there will be opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the Christian faith, but the vicar is always available to help you and encourage you. Feedback
Please let us know how comfortable we made you feel coming to this church

Can I use my mobile phone during the service? Please put your mobile phone onto silent and vibrate mode if you need to be contactable. If you receive a call during the service please go outside to answer the call so as not to disturb others.

Stations of the Cross

St James' Church, Chapelthorpe WF4 3JG.

Tuesday 31st March at 6pm.

The Stations of the Cross have formed part of Christian devotion at Passiontide for many centuries because they enable us to engage actively with the path of suffering walked by Jesus. At each Station around the church, we gather and a reading for the scene depicted and a time of reflection before moving to the next Station.

They originated when early Christians visited Jerusalem and wanted to follow literally in the footsteps of Jesus, tracing the path from Pilate’s house to Calvary. They would pause for prayer and devotion at various points. Eventually those pilgrims brought the practice back to their home countries and ever since then Christians of differing traditions have used this form of devotion. The Feast of The Annunciation, Wednesday 25th March at 6pm.

All are welcome

The Annunciation is the event where the angel Gabriel visits Mary and tells her she will give birth to Jesus, the Son of God. Mary is initially troubled but listens as Gabriel explains that this will happen through the Holy Spirit. With humility and faith, Mary accepts her role, saying, “Let it be with me according to your word.” This moment marks the beginning of Jesus’s life on earth and is celebrated as a sign of Mary’s obedience and God’s favour.

Ash Wednesday Service on the 18th February at 6pm.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar, a period of reflection, repentance, and preparation leading up to Easter.

Its origins date back to the early centuries of the Church, when Christians adopted the ancient practice of using ashes as a symbol of penance. Traditionally, worshippers receive a cross of ashes on the forehead, accompanied by the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” This serves as a powerful reminder of human mortality and the call to spiritual renewal.

Over the centuries, Ash Wednesday has remained a significant observance for many Christian denominations, encouraging believers to enter the Lenten season with humility and devotion.
