The Pothole Problem

Drivers across our area will be forgiven for thinking we’re losing the battle against potholes. Despite official figures showing that our roads have the least reported potholes in Devon, the reality on the ground tells a very different story. From rattling car suspensions to dodging craters on everyday journeys, many residents feel we’re actually dealing with some of the *most pothole-ridden roads* in the county.

So how can both things be true?

The answer is simple: potholes that aren’t reported don’t officially exist. If damage isn’t logged, it doesn’t appear in the statistics and it’s far less likely to be repaired. That means our “good” figures may say more about under-reporting than the true condition of our roads.

How to report a pothole

Reporting a pothole is easier than you might think, and it really does make a difference.

The Devon County Council (DCC) website is the quickest and most effective way to report problems
https://www.devon.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/report-a-problem/

Reports made online go straight to the contractor responsible for inspections and repairs, helping issues get assessed more quickly.

If you’d rather speak to someone—or can’t face another form—the Highways contact number is: 0345 155 1004

What information to give

When reporting a pothole, accuracy helps, but perfection isn’t required. Just provide as best you can:

* The road name
* The nearest house number, junction, or recognisable feature (such as a bus stop or sign)
*Any extra detail that helps pinpoint the location

Every report adds to the bigger picture. If more residents take a few minutes to log the potholes they see, the statistics will finally reflect reality—and our chances of seeing safer, smoother roads will improve.

If we want fewer potholes, we need to start by reporting the ones we already have.

If you are reporting an emergency that requires immediate attention, please call us on 0345 155 1004. An emergency on the highway is defined as something

A public consultation asking people to help shape the future of Devon’s 50 libraries was recently launched, this is to seek views about the future of the library service in Devon.
It will run for 12 weeks and focus on a number of options, including opening hours, the use of technology, and the potential for community-managed libraries. Closing date 22nd February.
The consultation is available online via a Devon County Council engagement platform at https://devon.cc/devon-libraries-pm
Visitors will be able to:

• Fill in one of two surveys (one is specifically for young people aged 13 to17 years)

Local Government Reorganisation
The government’s public consultation on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Devon has now commenced

The Consultation can be found on the government website: Local government reorganisation in Devon, Plymouth and Torbay - GOV.UK

In response to the invitation from government last year to submit ideas for LGR, a number of proposals were submitted from authorities in Devon.

In total 4 proposals were submitted by Devon County Council, Plymouth City Council/ Exeter City Council, Torbay Council and a collaboration of 7 District Councils.

The proposal that has been submitted by the seven District Councils, which was commonly referred to as the 4-5-1 plan, includes a main case that would see the creation of two new authorities named Exeter and North Devon and Torbay and South Devon alongside Plymouth remaining on existing boundaries. It also contained a modified option, supported by most of the seven authorities, to modestly expand the boundaries of Plymouth into 4 parishes currently in the South Hams area. This has commonly been referred to as the 4-5-1+ plan.

The overarching proposal is branded as “Reimagining Devon” and was drafted as a single proposal. However, you will note that the “Reimagining Devon” branding does not appear on the government website referred to above and that in fact government has split the proposal into two separate proposals. This could cause some confusion - hence this additional explanation:

On the government website, the “main case” Reimaging Devon proposal is the one described as:-

“South Hams District Council, Teignbridge Borough Council, West Devon Borough Council proposed 3 unitary councils. These would comprise the current areas of:

Exeter and Northern Devon Unitary: East Devon, Exeter, Mid Devon, North Devon and Torridge
Plymouth to remain unchanged
Torbay and Southern Devon Unitary: South Hams, Teignbridge, Torbay and West Devon”
The modified version of Reimagining Devon with the option to expand the boundaries of Plymouth is the one described as:-

“East Devon Borough Council, Mid Devon District Council, North Devon Council, Torridge District Council proposed 3 unitary councils. This includes a request to split existing district council areas between the proposed new councils. These would comprise the current areas of:

Exeter and Northern Devon Unitary: East Devon, Exeter, Mid Devon, North Devon, and Torridge
Plymouth Expanded: parts of the parishes of Bickleigh, Briston, Shaugh Prior and Sparkwell from the neighbouring district of South Hams
Torbay and Southern Devon Unitary: South Hams, Teignbridge, Torbay and West Devon”
