Holy Trinity Living Churchyard, Heath Town

Holy Trinity Living Churchyard, Heath Town Holy Trinity Living Churchyard at Holy Trinity, Heath Town is a place for young and old to relax, reflect and learn. A place to remember loved ones...

A place in the city for wildlife to flourish. This seven acre churchyard in the Heath Town area of Wolverhampton opened in the 1850s. Several parts of it have recently been renovated, making it more accessible and welcoming as well as developing it to encourage wildlife. We have a peaceful Community Garden area with seating and attractive planting, while the oldest part of the churchyard has a num

ber of trees and a succession of spring wild flowers that make it a delight at that time of year. There are many well established trees, a number of which have bird and bat boxes. We also have a separate small wooded area that is less managed to attract wildlife. There is a small group of volunteers that meet up at least once a month to help maintain the churchyard and keep it looking good. If you would like to know more about the churchyard or are interested in helping out please get in touch, email [email protected]

It’s National Snowdrop Day today and they are looking great in the churchyard !
There is a lot of folklore about snowdrops, one legend says that when a snowflake, warmed by an angel’s breath, touched the cold barren earth it transformed into a beautiful flower.
Its blooms became a symbol of hope and the promise of better days ahead—a light shining from darkness to gladden our hearts.

The results of the annual Lichfield Diocese Churchyard Awards scheme were announced on Saturday and we are delighted that, in a repeat of last year, Holy Trinity received a GOLD certificate along with the Nature Friendly award.

This is a fantastic result, and a great reward and recognition for all the work and commitment put in by a small team of volunteers over the year – congratulations and massive thanks to all of them.

Just a few days till our “Churches Count on Nature” day in the churchyard. This project, organised by the charity Caring for God’s Acre, aims to record the plantlife and wildlife in churchyards around the country.
We will be using the “iNaturalist” app, which is an easy and fun way to make records. Don’t worry if you think you can’t identify anything apart from dandelions and daisies, the app does the work for you and we are interested in the common species along with lesser known.
Simply download the app, open an account and then take a photo of whatever you find – the app will suggest names for what you have found, add location, date and time and you simply upload the info to the project.
Far more details can be found at https://www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk along with helpful videos, and there will be help to get you started on the day.

We start around 10.30am, you can explore the seven acres of churchyard and see what you find.

We had a lovely visitor to the churchyard today, a young buzzard who popped in to check us out. Had a look at the car park and then inspected areas of the churchyard that we have recently mown from a suitable viewpoint.
The jackdaws weren't too pleased to see him, but they were ignored.
Obviously felt at home !
So wonderful to see such wildlife in the churchyard, and proves how important these spaces are. Would be great if he's still around this Saturday for our day.

Just under two weeks till the start of “Love your burial ground” week, promoted by the charity Caring for God's Acre.

As part of the week, on Saturday 8th June we are participating in "Churches Count on Nature", a project to record the plants and wildlife found in the churchyard. Anyone who has a smartphone or tablet can help with this, you don’t need to be an expert. Simply download the iNaturalist app and open an account.
Anything that you take a photo of will be recorded, and will eventually appear on the National Biodiversity Network Atlas of the UK.
There are lots of details at https://www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk and there will be help to get you started on the day.

We have lots of other activities planned in the churchyard for the weekend of June 8 - 9th so please come along and join in.

The Churchyard Team had a really productive morning yesterday, finishing off the edging of the paths in the community garden, mowing the grass around the church, making a start on clearing the old ground now that the spring flowers are going over and more of the regular grass mowing elsewhere in the churchyard.

And also found time to help out visitors from Australia looking for family graves!

Many thanks to Wendy, Nigel, Barbara, Andy, Brian, Dave and Sylvia for all their hard work.
We next meet on Saturday 1st June, come along, from 10am, if you would like to help keep the churchyard looking good.

We seem to be in peak Cow Parsley season !
The mass planting in the Old Ground area of the churchyard is amazing this year, and looks wonderful with the spring green colours of the lime trees.
It won’t look this good for much longer before it starts to fade along with the other late spring flowers.
