The Church of The Good Shepherd, Low Hill

The Church of The Good Shepherd, Low Hill We are a Church of England, open evangelical church, welcoming everyone who wishes to come through t

The Church of the Good Shepherd has been serving the people of Low Hill, within the Parish of Bushbury since 1929. The original church was destroyed by fire in 1946 and replaced in 1956. Owing to structural problems, this was demolished and the church community relocated to the building alongside, 'The Shepherd Centre'. This church owned community building was built next to the church and opened i

n 1989. Work was undertaken in 2000 to extend the building to provide a worship area, sanctuary and vestry. This, then, is the Church at the Centre; more than a building, we are a vibrant fellowship whose worship has a richness and depth through words, music and prayer which impacts on our lives and the lives of others.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END
Though we like to keep it quiet, the truth is that in this life, ‘all good things must come to an end’,
whether it be a much longed-for holiday on the one hand or a long-lived life on the other. Both of
these remind us that in life there is always a full stop, and if there is no hope of something better
than we are, as Paul put it, ‘of all people most to be pitied’. It is then with some irony that the season
of Lent is when many Christians reduce their sense of hope by becoming less reliant on what we
might term our ‘little hopes’! Those things that we look forward to on a daily or regular basis. Why?
To make life more difficult?! To earn favour with our Maker?!
Favour may come, yes, by volunteering to abstain from some of our little hopes, but this is not in a
transactional or slot-machine way. And what might be our little hopes? Most commonly, these have
included fasting in some form. I know it is a little twee that folk say they are going to give up
chocolate for Lent, but that is part of my plans for this Lent, but don’t tell anyone. For me, this is
quite a big deal as I love a cup of tea and some choc…. Will I get withdrawal symptoms?
So we might say in the very season of spring, we are choosing to go back into winter! And the main
reason? Surely it is this: that we don’t want to rely on or be distracted by those little hopes, or
perhaps quite big ones, but we want to wait and be ready to celebrate a Very Big HOPE… as we
celebrate Jesus rising from the dead! ‘And hope does not disappoint, because God’s love has been
poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.’ (Romans 5:5).

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

26/02/2026

Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

25/02/2026

LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago.
