The Gospel of Jesus is not just about his death on our behalf. What is paramount to the Christian life is to know him as our risen Saviour every day.

When thinking about hardship and suffering, we should always ask "why?", and the answer is because we serve a risen saviour. This gospel of Jesus' death and resurrection is not only the foundation of our faith as Christians, but also the practical basis of learning to live for Christ and spiritual growth.

Paul urges Timothy to be strong in the grace found in Christ Jesus, and to faithfully pass on God's truth to others, especially those who will teach future generations. He uses the examples of a soldier, athlete, and farmer to highlight the discipline, endurance, and dedication needed to serve Christ well. Believers are encouraged to remain focused, work faithfully, and trust in God for strength and understanding.

When we first encountered the Lord Jesus, we were on fire with passionate devotion for him. We wanted to tell anybody who would listen about the perfect man who gave his life for our salvation. But, like most things, time and life circumstances can blunt that feeling. We start to forget the endurance we once had and begin to do things out of habit and routine instead of love.

Today, we talk about remembering and rekindling that first love we felt for Jesus, and how to keep it burning bright—for Jesus, for our church family, and for ourselves.

God has given us his spirit of power, love and self control—that means we ought to fear nothing for him. Not him, our own reputation for him, the gospel, or the effects of the gospel. This passage encourages us to be sold out for Jesus, to share Jesus without fear, and not to be ashamed. Of course, if we do not know and understand the “gospel”, we cannot walk in this same Spirit. Catching the Spirit’s wind is a conscious task of living out our faith in witness and deed.

How do you live passionately, with meaning and purpose in a world that is so mindless, meaningless and mundane? Paul's letter to Timothy as he is facing death is about that. Timothy is his protégé and he doesn't want him to be a washout, so he writes out of his experience, desperation even, about how to live and live well for Jesus. These first verses of his "epitaph" are a series of "reminders" of things we need to do in order to catch the wind of the Holy Spirit in the sail of our lives.
