Dear Friends,
On April 11th the Parochial Church Council of St Martin of Tours Parish met in the presence of the Bishop of Oswestry and the then Archdeacon of Walsall, alongside other interested community parties. After much discussion it was determined that St Martin's should petition the Diocese of Lichfield for closure.
This having occurred, this morning the following statement was made before Mass and to inform the APCM which followed.
The Church of St Martin of Tours, Rough Hills, Wolverhampton
After a period of discernment and prayer, as well as conversations with our Bishop and others, I have decided that it is now time to suspend all public worship at St Martin’s Church. This includes both the Anglican and Orthodox congregations, and is a decision made on resource grounds as soon we will be unable to meet our financial obligations regarding insurance, repairs and utility bills.
In addition, I must terminate the informal agreement which enables the Romanian Orthodox Church to worship in the Nave and Chancel at St Martin’s. This agreement, whilst initially promising, has led to conflict in a number of particulars, and has become something of a problem in the local community, despite attempts to resolve specific issues. We regret the necessity of this decision.
The final day for Sunday worship at St Martin’s Church will be Sunday 21 July. We will enter discussions with individual parishioners and offer advice as to suitable worship possibilities elsewhere.
The process for discerning the future of the parish will continue through the Diocese of Lichfield.
The church will honour a commitment to weddings which have been booked until the end of August 2024.

Please pray for the faithful remnant for whom this is devastating news.
