We partner with Christians Against Poverty (CAP) to operate the Wiveliscombe Debt Centre, reaching West Somerset, East Devon and Exmoor.

💡💡 DID YOU KNOW? THE HISTORY BEHIND HALLOWEEN! 🎃

Halloween has a fascinating and complex history!

📜 1. An ancient seasonal festival
Before Christianity became established across Britain and Ireland, people observed seasonal festivals, including the Gaelic festival of Samhain, which marked the transition from harvest towards winter. Some traditional beliefs associated this time of year with the dead and the supernatural.

✝️ 2. The Christian connection
The Christian calendar includes All Saints’ Day on 1 November, a day to remember the saints and faithful Christians. The evening before became known as All Hallows’ Eve, the origin of the name Halloween. All Souls’ Day follows on 2 November in Western Christian traditions.

🎃 3. How did modern Halloween develop?
Over centuries, different customs blended and evolved. Practices such as dressing up, carving lanterns and going door to door developed through a mixture of folk traditions, community customs and later popular culture.

📖 But here’s something for us to reflect on as Christians…

Rather than allowing this season to centre our attention on fear, death and the supernatural, we can use it as an opportunity to point people towards the One who conquered death!

❤️ Our hope isn’t found in traditions or seasonal celebrations. Our hope is found in Jesus Christ!

🧡 WHEN THE WORLD CELEBRATES DARKNESS, LET’S CELEBRATE LIFE! ✨

This season, there’s no shortage of spooky decorations, frightening stories and things that celebrate death.

But as Christians, we have something far greater to celebrate! 🙌

Jesus didn’t come to leave us in darkness. He came to bring us life, hope and freedom!

We don’t need to glorify darkness to have fun. We can celebrate God’s goodness, enjoy His creation, love our neighbours and shine His light into the world.

🕯️ Let’s be people who point others towards LIFE!

🛡️STAND FIRM IN YOUR FAITH! 🛡️

Every day, we’re faced with choices that can draw us closer to God or pull us away from Him.

The enemy wants us distracted, divided and discouraged, but God calls us to stand firm in His truth.

Put on the armour of God. Pray continually. Test everything against Scripture.

Don’t give the enemy a foothold where God has called you to stand firm.

🙏 Heavenly Father, please strengthen us to stand faithfully in Your truth. In Jesus' name, Amen. 🙏

My kitchen floor is no less a place for prayer than a church pew.

I can stand beside a sink full of dishes and tell Jesus what weighs on me. I can speak to Him in pajamas, before the coffee brews or the house wakes up. Nothing about that moment needs dressing up.

I love the hush of a church. Yet I need God through the hours between Sunday services, while bills wait on the table and supper needs stirring. Those hours belong to Him, too.

When I welcome Jesus into my day, I open myself to the love He already offers. My prayer gives that love room to shape my choices.

Then comes the work of living what I prayed: answering without snapping, noticing who needs help, setting down my phone to listen. I want my time with God to bear fruit where I live.

Where in my daily routine could I pause and speak honestly with Jesus?

🌾 THE LORD OF THE HARVEST

In a world where we see uncertainty, division, fear and people searching for hope, the need for Jesus has never been something we can ignore.

Our communities are full of people who need to hear the truth of the Gospel, not just from a pulpit, but through lives that reflect Christ.

Are we willing to be the labourers?

Let’s pray for our town, our neighbours and our nation. And let’s be willing to go beyond prayer and share the hope we have in Jesus.

🌾 Lord of the harvest, open our eyes, soften our hearts and make us willing to be Your hands and feet.

The harvest is His. The calling is ours. 🙏

🧡Love Is More Than Good Intentions🧡

Sometimes we pray for better relationships.

God may be asking us to take the first step.
A message. A kind word. An invitation. A willingness to listen, even when life is busy or reaching out feels awkward.

Good relationships rarely grow by accident. They take effort, patience, humility and a genuine interest in others. We cannot control how people respond, but we can choose not to let pride, comfort or fear stop us from showing Christ’s love.

So put love into practice.

We are called to encourage one another, carry one another’s burdens and make every effort to live in peace. That means being intentional, not just waiting for others to come to us.

📖 “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another.” Romans 12:10 (KJV)

“Is Jesus truly Lord of my life, or only Lord when His way agrees with mine?”

Take that question to God today. Open His Word. Be honest before Him. Ask Him for the courage to obey, even when it costs you something.

His call isn’t to a comfortable, half-surrendered life. It’s to a life transformed by His grace, lived for His glory.

You don’t have to have it all together to follow Jesus. But you do have to be willing to let Him lead. 🙏
