Pope Leo's address to the authorities, civil society, and diplomatic corps in Cameroon (excerpt)
'Sixteen hundred years ago, St Augustine wrote words that have great relevance today: “Those who rule serve those whom they seem to command; for they rule not from a love of power, but from a sense of the duty they owe to others — not because they are proud of authority, but because they love mercy” [De civitate Dei, XIX, 14]. From this perspective, serving one’s country means dedicating oneself, with a clear mind and an upright conscience, to the common good of all people in the nation. This includes dedication to both the majority of the population and the minorities, as well as their mutual harmony.'

The Church Fathers: Who Are They? Picture of St Augustine.
🔥
Did you know that long before the Bible was fully compiled, the early Church was already teaching and living the Christian faith?
The Church Fathers—early bishops and theologians—faithfully preserved and explained the teachings of Jesus Christ. Through their writings, they show that the beliefs of the Catholic Church today are not new inventions, but have been handed down from the very beginning.
📖 Who Are the Church Fathers?
The Church Fathers are early Christian leaders (1st–8th century AD) who guided the Church after the Apostles. They defended the truth, explained doctrine, and helped shape the life of the early Christian community.
They are generally grouped into:
• Apostolic Fathers (close to the Apostles)
• Greek (Eastern) Fathers
• Latin (Western) Fathers
👥 Who Are Some of Them?
• Ignatius of Antioch – taught the authority of bishops and the reality of the Eucharist
• Irenaeus of Lyons – defended apostolic Tradition
• Clement of Rome – early witness to Church leadership
• Athanasius of Alexandria – defended that Christ is truly God
• Basil the Great – helped explain the Trinity
• Gregory of Nazianzus – great teacher on the Trinity
• Gregory of Nyssa – deep insights on the spiritual life
• Ambrose of Milan – defended the authority of the Church
• Jerome – translated the Bible into Latin
• Augustine of Hippo – one of the greatest Christian thinkers
✝️ Their Contributions to Christianity
✔ Defended the faith against heresies
✔ Explained key doctrines like the Trinity and Christ’s divinity
✔ Preserved Apostolic Tradition
✔ Helped shape how Scripture is understood
✔ Influenced Church structure and worship
⭐ Conclusion
The Church Fathers are powerful witnesses that Christianity is not a man-made religion that developed later, but a faith firmly rooted in the teachings of the Apostles.
Their writings remind us that truth is not based on personal interpretation alone, but is faithfully handed down through the Church guided by the Holy Spirit.
🙏 Reflection
“To know the early Church is to understand the foundation of the true faith.”

Kitty Jennings Funeral was last week. Kitty and he husband John lived in Hanborough and for many years came to Mass more or less every day. In their old age they moved to Yarnton and were sad not to continue this practice. Now they are re-united in the Lord. May they rest in peace.

The Funeral (Requiem Mass) for Dot Walker is on Monday 23rd February at 11.00am. May she rest in peace. Here is a photo of her garden again. She tended her flowers in the pots with great care whilst Father Martin mowed her grass and did any pruning and weeding.

Dot Walker died late yesterday afternoon. She is the lady who used to sit right in the back right hand corner of the church with crutches or a zimmer frame. Her memory of St Peter's goes back to the time with Father Lopes when the church was a wooden hut. She has always been a regular at Sunday Mass although she has been in hospital for the last few months. May she rest in peace. Here are a couple of photos of her garden taken by Father Martin - her gardener!
