The services of a conservation accredited professional adviser are needed at Church of Christ, Church Road, Christchurch PE14 9PQ, for a major programme of repairs and reordering.

This project will lead to the church building being removed from the Heritage at Risk Register, and safe to re-open for wider community use. The PCC will need to apply for support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (a grant under £1 million), with a view to the project being completed by 2031.

For further details and the pre-qualification questionnaire, please contact Danielle Carver - [email protected] / 07599456983

Suitably qualified practitioners will then be invited to tender.

The closing date for the pre-qualification questionnaire is 28th October 2025. It is anticipated that tenders will be required by a closing date of 25th November 2025.
If you have any queries, please contact Danielle Carver on the details above, or Steve Drawbridge (chairman) on 07515 119605.

One of the most imminent projects the renovation team are focusing on is protecting and preserving the Church’s Organ, from the rapidly deteriorating ceiling above it. As with any historical building, this isn’t an easy process, but a ‘faculty’ has been awarded for these works to take place as a matter of priority.

So, I thought I would talk here about the Organ in the Church, which was built by George Holdich, an Organ builder who has built many of the Organs in small parish churches across the East Anglian region (including a very similar one in the neighboring church at Welney).

About Holdich:
Holdich was speculated to have been a student at Cambridge University, before leaving to become an apprentice for James Bishop. Holdich built an Organ for the English Cathedral on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, as well as instruments for South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, India and Mauritius (source: https://www.bowerorgans.co.uk/main/holdich.htm )

Church of Christ’s Organ:
Most Organs have two or three manuals (what look like piano keyboards to us non-organ playing folk), but the organ at Christchurch has just 1! It also features a Sesquialtera stop, which combines two pipes at different pitches – in some pitch ranges, it can apparently sound like a clarinet.

FUN FACT:
You know the saying, “pulled out all the stops”? This is derived from pulling the stops (which control the airflowthrough the pipes), out of an organ; this puts the volume at full throttle!

The church is open today, 12pm-4pm, for visitors to go in and take a look.

Hard hats mandatory, but there are plenty there! 😊
