Today we celebrate our Patronal Festival, which is the liturgical Sunday from which our Church gets its name. It is appropriate on a day such as this to give thanks to God for all that he has done in this place in years past and all that he continues to do at this time. As such, we are having a celebratory bring and share lunch after Mass at the back of church and in the church yard adjacent. Please join us after the service!

Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, or Whitsunday as it is called in the Book of Common Prayer (with “Whit” likely referring to the white garments traditionally worn by those who were baptised on this day). In our reading from Acts chapter 2, we remember that, fifty days after the Crucifixion, the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the first disciples, giving them power to witness for Christ and the Gospel in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the Earth. Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Church because it is the beginning in earnest of the Church’s mission to “make disciples of all nations”. May you experience the energising and quickening power of the Holy Spirit as we gather together this morning.

Today’s Mass takes place in the period between Christ’s Ascension and the sending of the Holy Spirit upon the Church at Pentecost. Thus it is a day of longing for the presence of God and for his power to be at work in our lives. During this time let us pray for the refreshing presence of the Holy Spirit.

Today we celebrate Christ’s glorious Ascension to the right hand of God the Father. This moment is the culmination of the Easter season at which point Christ’s rising from the realm of the dead, to life again and to the highest place is completed. At the Father’s right hand, Jesus takes his place as ruler of the universe and the conqueror of God’s enemies of sin, death, hell and the demonic powers. Let us praise Christ Jesus as we gather together this evening.

We are very pleased to welcome today as our guest preacher the Rev’d Dr Philip Krinks. Fr Philip is currently the Director of the Centre for Enterprise, Markets and Ethics, a think tank which promotes ethical foundations for a market economy. He has previously worked in international development and has held clerical posts as the Rector of St Faith’s and Bishop’s Chaplain in the Diocese of Wi******er.
