The glimmering shapes of the Les Braves Memorial rise from the sands of Omaha Beach. They reach heavenward as if the beach itself is trying to speak.

The sculpture stands where the battle raged on D-Day, as men ran into relentless fire with nowhere to hide. The steel shapes represent wings of hope, the rise of freedom, and the courage of those who stepped into almost certain death.

As the tide moves in and out around it, the memorial feels alive, a timeless reminder of the moment when everything changed on this shoreline. This place doesn’t glorify the violence, it points beyond it to something else.

Standing with the sea stretching out before you, it reminds us that sacrifice like this was never just about war, but about the enduring hope that freedom and ultimately life itself would rise again.

Discover the story of Sydney Bates, the British Army soldier awarded the Victoria Cross during the Battle of Normandy in World War Two.

Serving with the 1st Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment, Sydney Bates held off repeated German attacks near Sourdeval after D-Day in August 1944. Despite being severely wounded, he continued firing his Bren gun to protect his comrades and was posthumously awarded Britain’s highest military honour for bravery.

Last Sunday morning it was a privilege to be speaking to St Thomas Church in Fair Oak at their weekend away. The church is led by my great friend Jono Harvey.

Jono and I worked side-by-side for many years leading Miracle Street. I’m a mission partner of the church and so many of my closest friends are there. It was brilliant to stand together and celebrate 25 years of friendship and partnership in the gospel.

Come with me as I explore the moving story of two brothers, Joseph and Robert Casson, who died within two days of each other during World War II.

One served in the Durham Light Infantry while the other was in 45 Commando. I discuss how their graves represent another family that lost two sons in the conflict, and reflect on other families who experienced similar losses, including fathers and sons who died in different locations during that dreadful war.

🔥 A short walk from the Pudding Lane road sign stands the huge monument to the Great Fire of London.

Built in the years after the disaster, it rises high above the surrounding streets as a permanent reminder of what happened here. It’s so close to the spot where the fire started, almost like London’s way of refusing to forget.

Huge cities rise, and the people who live and work there assume that tomorrow will be exactly the same as today, but history reminds us how quickly things can change.
