I spent a beautiful late summer afternoon at the Thiepval Memorial earlier this year - a monument which towers high above the battlefields of the Somme.

It carries the names and remembers 76,000 fallen British and Commonwealth soldiers of the Great War who have no other known grave and when you add to it the 54,000 names on the Menin Gate and the 32,000 on the memorial wall at the Tyne Cot Cemetery you get a scale of the loss. And of course, the missing are just a fraction of those who were killed during that senseless conflict that dragged 32 nations into the struggle.

It’s almost unbelievable when you visit these places. Lest we forget.

60 years ago today, children had just finished singing when disaster struck.

At 9:15 AM on October 21st 1966 a mountain of coal waste slid onto the village of Aberfan, burying the junior school. Miners and villagers began digging with their bare hands. 144 people died. 116 were children. A teacher was found clutching 5 children in his arms.

A valley lost its future in minutes, yet strangers stood shoulder to shoulder, refusing to stop searching. Real love goes down into the dark to look for the lost. Even when the singing stops, hope refuses to die.

When Thomas Edison died, cities across America dimmed their lights in tribute to the man who had banished the darkness. On October the 18th, 1931, the great inventor passed away aged 84 He held over a thousand patents, bringing electric light into homes, music to parlors, and moving pictures to the screen. But he knew failure well, famously finding ten thousand ways that wouldn't work until he found the one that did. Yet for all his genius, no lamp he built could light the human heart. There's a deeper darkness in all of us and a greater light that still shines that darkness has never overcome.

This is the remarkable story of the Lochnagar Crater, the biggest man-made crater in Europe.

At 7:28 AM on July the 1st, 1916, the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, British Army tunnelers who had got underneath the German front line, mostly miners, had rigged it with 60,000 pounds of explosives that was then detonated as the Battle of the Somme began.

It was meant to give them the advantage, but it became the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army.
