Steve Lee - Miracle Street

Steve Lee - Miracle Street I carry a message of hope indoors, outdoors and online via the work of Miracle Street.

I also visit history's battlefields to tell the story of freedom through sacrifice to people who may never walk into a church.

On the steps of this church a long time ago on a summer’s day, soldiers laid the body of an American officer wrapped in the Stars and Stripes. People from the liberated village came out of the ruins of their homes to lay flowers beside him.

They called him the Major of Saint-Lô. His name was Thomas Howie, and back home, he was not a warrior. He was an English teacher and an athletic coach at a military academy in Virginia. He was married to Elizabeth, and he was the father of a little girl called Sally. Not really the type of guy that you would expect to die leading a bayonet charge in the dark. But his men would have followed him anywhere because they knew that he cared about them, and he cared about whether they made it home or not.

Leaders, teachers, and saviours go ahead of everyone else to make the way clear.

During the summer of 1944, America mourned the loss of one of its officers. At that point, nobody knew his name. They simply called him the Major of Saint-Lô.

He was Thomas Howie, a schoolteacher from Virginia, who told his men he would meet them in the liberated town. A shell fragment killed him just before he got there. His distraught, inconsolable men refused to leave him behind, so they carried his body in and laid it in the rubble of the steps of Saint Cross Church.

A whole nation grieved a man it couldn’t name. Maybe that’s what made the loss feel like everyone’s.

This is the Normandy American Cemetery where Major Thomas Howie was laid to rest beneath a single white stone cross.

“I’ll see you in Saint-Lô”. They were his final words to his exhausted men. Major Howie had led them in a terrifying bayonet charge to rescue another battalion who were cornered and out of ammunition. And so when Howie’s men marched into the ruined town, they carried his flag-draped body and placed him in the ruins of a church of all places. Now he rests here above Omaha Beach, where he landed on D-Day.

His cross, like all the others, face west towards America and home.

Long ago, soldiers laid the body of a dead officer at the steps of a ruined church. They called him the Major of Saint-Lô.

Thomas Howie was a quiet guy from Virginia who’d promised his exhausted men he would see them in Saint-Lô moments before he was killed in action. When his devastated men broke into the ruined town, General Gerhardt made sure that the major’s promise was kept. Howie’s body was carried in ahead of the column and laid under the American flag.

Local people knew only that an American had died for them. Some promises outlive the one who made them.

On August 28th, 1963, 250,000 people heard 4 words that would shake a nation.

Dr. Martin Luther King was the speaker at the March on Washington, the largest political rally America had ever seen. Most of the crowd were Black, yet thousands of White marchers stood beside them. King spoke the words that echo to this day, I have a dream that my children will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character.

A dream that everyone matters, every soul is precious, and that love, not hatred, would have the final word

On August 25th, 1900, the man who declared, God is dead died, and his words outlived him. Friedrich Nietzsche was no friend of faith, and yet a century later, those words are still being sprayed on subway walls across the world. One version goes even further God is not dead, He just doesn't wanna get involved. Perhaps that is the more devastating lie, but I do understand why people feel that God has forgotten them. If you have ever felt that Heaven has gone silent, hold on, because the truth is very different. God has not turned His back. He came looking through His Son, and that light still breaks into the darkest of places.

On August 20th 1912 a ragged old preacher lie dying in London. Within days, a 150,000 people would walk past his coffin.

William Booth had walked away from a comfortable pulpit to preach in the gin-soaked slums of East London to the drunks, the destitute, and the forgotten. They mocked his mission as a fake army, but the name stuck, The Salvation Army.

Booth believed that no one was beyond the reach of God’s love, not the thief, not the outcast, and not you and me. He poured out his life so that others could find Jesus. That same offer of hope still stands wide open today.

Not long ago, I visited the statue of William Booth on Mile End Road in East London, close to where he began the Christian Mission in 1865. Standing there, looking up at the man whose work would become the Salvation Army, made his story feel far more immediate.

In the East End’s crowded streets, Booth saw people many had learned to ignore: families in poverty, those trapped by addiction and lives pushed to the margins. He believed the Christian message had to be more than words spoken from a distance; it had to be carried into the places where hope felt hardest to find.

On August the 19th 1942, 6,000 men climbed into assault boats bound for a French port. Very few would return.

Operation Jubilee would end in tragedy. Miles out at sea, German gunboats opened up from the shoreline. As the ramps dropped on the assault boats, the casualties began piling up on the shingle, and the sea ran red at the waterline. Four thousand men, mostly Canadians, were killed, wounded, or captured.

Lord Mountbatten famously said, “For every man lost at Dieppe, ten were saved on the beaches of Normandy two years later.”

No comfort for the grieving families, yet from that dark day, others would one day live.
