Congratulations to the Catholic community in Wi******er as they mark the centenary of St Peter's Church. It was an honour to attend the Solemn Ecumenical Vespers on Tuesday that began this week of celebrations. We give thanks for their faithful presence in the city and pray every blessing for the next 100 years 🙏🏼

We are honoured to be hosting this important Diocesan service at 3pm today (Saturday). It is being held at St Bartholomew because in the Parish there once stood the largest of eight mother and baby homes or shelters run by the Diocese of Wi******er. All are welcome.

Do remember that tomorrow the diocese is holding a Service of Lament and Reflection at St Bartholomew's Church in Wi******er at 3pm, to honour those affected by mother and baby homes and forced adoption practices. All are warmly welcome to come along.

St Lawrence Church was unaffected by the fire in The Square this morning
but we are so sad for Cafe Monde and the other businesses damaged. Thank you to all the emergency services for their prompt action to contain the spread and protect the public.

A fire has taken hold of historic buildings in The Square, Wi******er, near Wi******er Cathedral.

Thank you to the fantastic team of people who organised and helped at the Celebration day, including friends from Hyde900 and The Hyde Tavern. What a wonderful community 😊

We know a lot of effort and time has been put into this, so a huge well done to the team at St Bartholomew's Church in Hyde!

They have just celebrated the first major refurbishment of the church since Victorian times with the completion of phase one of its ‘Giving for Living’ project, which aims to make the church greener, more accessible and more flexible for use by the community, while preserving its historic character.

Revd Karen Kousseff said, "It's an exciting project that will make the church much more fit for modern and future use.”

What a wonderful day we had at St Bartholomew's last Saturday, celebrating with our community the completion of an important stage in making the building greener, more accessible and more flexible for modern needs. Here's the report in the Diocesan Newsletter today:

Little Wrigglers meet today at the earlier time of 9am to 10.30am, in view of the extreme heat forecast for later.
Art @ St Bart's will go ahead at 7pm: we are so grateful to Anne Desmet for making the journey on this rearranged date, to give us an insight into the art of wood engraving. The church will be cool and the wine chilled! Tickets available on the door from 6.30pm.

We echo the statement below and are honoured to be hosting the service at St Bartholomew's Church, as the parish in which the Diocesan Maternity Home was situated. We pray for all who have suffered as a result of the historic adoption policy 🙏🙏🙏

The Diocese of Wi******er joins with the national Church of England in saying we are sincerely sorry to mothers, children and families harmed by its historic adoption practices.

The Bishop of Basingstoke, the Rt Revd Kelly Betteridge, said: "Our diocese wants to reiterate the apology for the church’s role and the harm caused to women and their children, many of whom still carry the scars of the past. We do not claim to know every detail of what happened, but in our diocese we are committed to learning more and hearing the stories of those affected, so that the church can be what it is meant to be: a place where every person is treated as being made in the image of God, with dignity and love rather than judgement.”

We are holding a Service of Lament and Reflection on Saturday 11 July 2026 at 3pm at St Bartholomew’s Church in Wi******er. All are warmly welcome.

If anyone is affected by this issue or would like to contact the diocese about their experience, please email [email protected]
