Christian Meditation, Wigan

Christian Meditation, Wigan In the hurly burly of life where can I find space? Well, I can make space for myself. I can learn meditation in the Christian tradition.

Come and join our group any Wednesday 12.30 - 13.30 (and once a month 7.30pm) see 'about' for more details. It is hard to keep to a spiritual practice on your own. Therefore we try to meet up each Wednesday as a group. We meditate for 25 minutes in silence. As a lead into this we play music and then listen to a short talk about meditation. This is not to give us something to think about but to brin

g our minds to a state of peacefulness; to concentration. We follow the teaching of John Main, a Benedictine monk, who recommeded the use of a single sacred word, a mantra,as the focus of our attention , to lead us into the silence. There in the silence we encounter our true selves and the Ground of our Being, that many of us call God. We see ourselves as standing in the ancient Christian tradition of contemplative prayer reaching back through the mystics such as Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, the author of The Cloud of Unknowing, Walter Hilton, Meister Eckhart right back through the Desert Fathers of the 3rd century to the New Testament and ultimately to Jesus himself.
