Memorial Park – Unauthorised Encampment Update

Shevington Parish Council is aware of the unauthorised encampment currently at Memorial Park.

The matter was first reported to the Parish Council late on Wednesday evening. The Clerk attended the site the same evening, recorded photographs and video evidence, and reported the encampment to the relevant authorities at approximately 10.30pm.

The matter has been reported to both Wigan Council and Greater Manchester Police. A notice has now been served and the Council will continue to liaise with the relevant authorities while the legal process is followed.

We appreciate residents’ concerns and frustration. The Council is doing what it can within the correct legal process and will continue to monitor the position.

Once the encampment has left, a full inspection of the site will be carried out and any necessary clean-up or remedial work will be arranged.

Residents do not need to continue reporting the encampment to the Parish Council unless there is a significant new issue. If there is an immediate risk, criminal damage, threatening behaviour or obstruction, please report this directly to Greater Manchester Police.

Further updates will be provided when available.

Please note that drainage works at Shevington Park & Memorial Garden are due to begin from tomorrow morning.

The initial works will start at the front of the park, where manholes and associated equipment are to be installed to allow the scheme to progress.

The park will remain open, with access continuing as the works move around the site. Sections of the park will be temporarily cordoned off as work progresses, so we would ask residents to please take care and follow any signage in place.

The council will keep disruption to a minimum as far as possible and will continue to share updates as the works progress.

If any issues arise during the works, please contact the Clerk:

Thank you for your patience and understanding while these long-awaited improvement works are carried out.

Election clarification for residents

We are aware that there has been some confusion following the recent elections, so we wanted to provide a short factual reminder of how the process worked in Shevington.

At borough level, Wigan Council elects by thirds, so only one borough council seat in this area was up for election this time.

Separately, the parish council by-election related to one casual vacancy only on Shevington South ward. This means only electors living within that parish ward were eligible to vote in that parish by-election. (South Ward is WAE & WAD areas on the map only)

Shevington Parish Council is made up of 9 seats across its wards, and this election was only for 1 South ward seat. The other 8 seats were not part of this poll.

So, depending on where you live, you may have:

been eligible to vote in the borough election only
been eligible to vote in both the borough election and the parish by-election
or seen differences in the ballot papers issued at the polling station depending on your ward
The administration of elections, ballot papers and polling arrangements is handled by Wigan Council’s Elections Team, not by the Parish Council.

If any resident believes they may have been issued with the wrong ballot paper, this should be reported directly to [email protected] so that the Elections Team can review it.

WAH
WAC
WBA are outside of the Parish Area.

We hope this helps clear up some of the confusion.

Our Shevington shop is officially reopen for business!

A fantastic morning was had by all at our reopening ceremony and Ryan Prescott from Coronation Street kindly joined us for the special occasion. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to our friends at Greenmount Projects for their help with the refurbishment, The Little Carpet Shop in Leigh for donating carpet used in the shop, and Louise and Dave at Shevington Village Kitchen & Catering for donating sandwiches and treats for our volunteers on opening day.

And last but certainly not least, thank you to our incredible retail volunteers for all their hard work, help and support during the refurbishment.

🎄 Christmas Shop Window Competition – Winner Announced! 🎄
We’re delighted to announce the winner of this year’s Christmas Shop Window Competition 🎉

🏆 Asteria Beauty, Woodnook Road, Appley Bridge
Congratulations to Courtney and the team on a brilliantly creative and imaginative window featuring Mrs Claus enjoying a festive nail appointment — a clever idea, beautifully executed and full of Christmas charm.
A special mention as well to the talented 17-year-old client who helped bring the design to life — fantastic work 👏

As part of the competition, the winning business will be choosing a local charity to receive the prize money, which is a lovely way to give something back this Christmas ❤️
✨ Second and third place winners will be announced shortly, along with further details.
Thank you to all the businesses who took part — the standard was high and it’s been great to see so much creativity across the area.

🎄 We said we would — and we did!

This year the Shevington Christmas Tree has finally been released from jail.
No more Heras fortress — just a much nicer, natural fence so everyone can actually enjoy seeing it.

Still a few extra lights to add, but hopefully you’ll agree it already looks much better this year.

From all of us at Shevington Parish Council, we want to wish you a very Merry Christmas — however you celebrate it:
• as a tradition,
• as a bit of light in the darker winter months,
• with family and friends,
• or in the true Christian meaning of the season.

🌟 Happy Christmas, Shevington.

(And just to note — a few of the street decorations haven’t lit up tonight. These have already been reported and will be sorted.)
