After another summer of delightful lunchtime concerts at St John’s, Brunswick Street, we are looking forward to welcoming The Flyingdales Folk Choir to our final concert of the season this coming Friday, 4th September.

The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin is steeped in history, for example did you know that St Mary’s Chancel dates back to the 12th Century and is the oldest building in Whitby, older than the present Whitby Abbey, which is the third Abbey built on that site.

The Church has features such as a triple decker pulpit, box pews, the oldest dating back to the 15th Century, and one where Captain James Cook once sat.

Whether it is history you are interested in, or to a say a prayer, light a candle, or just looking for a quiet space to retreat from the busyness of life a warm welcome awaits all.

Opening hours are 10.00am to 4pm Monday to Friday, 11.30am to 4pm Saturday and 1pm to 4pm Sunday. Last entry on all days is 3.45pm. The church may be closed occasionally in these times if there is a wedding, funeral or school talk happening.

There is also a Said Eucharist held every every Saturday at 10.30am, followed by Coffee and Fellowship in the 12th Century Chancel, entrance via the Chancel door.

And a Sung Eucharist, or Morning Prayer, held every Sunday at 11.15am, followed by Fellowship and Coffee.

The clock faces were removed in 2023 due to their delicate state and damage caused by age and harsh weather. The clock was installed in 1897 and we would dearly like it back to its former glory for its 130th Anniversary in 2027. We are now in a position to begin work on our clock faces but need your help. In order for Cumbria Clocks to recast new clock faces and complete all necessary repairs we need to raise at least £60,000. Once the clock is back in full working order and its faces are again visible to the town, any money left will be spent on the fabric of St. Mary's as the building has plenty of repair work still needed. Thank you so much for any donation towards our cause. Soon, hopefully, the chimes of our clock will be heard again!
This is just one of the most jobs that needs doing on the fabric at St Mary's and over the coming years we will need to raise well over a million pounds to fund the work that needs doing.
