Exhibition at St Oswald's this weekend!

From Saturday 2nd August to Monday 4th August we're holding a local history exhibition titled 'Characters of Lythe', open from 11am to 4pm daily.

Step into the past and discover the lives of eight remarkable individuals who lived or worked in Lythe. This exhibition brings local history to life through stories, pictures and insights into the everyday faith, work and legacy of some of Lythe's characters.

Entry is free, but donations towards the Restoration Appeal will be most welcome. You will be able to buy delicious cream teas on all of the days, and there will be a home-baked cakes stall on Saturday.

The whole weekend is brought to a close with a concert on Monday 4th August from local chamber choir the Tuesday Singers under the baton of Stephen Maltby. An extremely wide-ranging programme brings some beautiful music as well as plenty of humour, so there's something for everyone.

The concert starts at 7pm and entry costs £7, with all proceeds going to the Restoration Appeal. Your entry gives you complimentary refreshments at the interval.

Hopefully you can come along to some part of the weekend - don't forget to have a look at the stunning four pairs of gates which have just been hung in the churchyard. They look wonderful!

Our wonderful Easter sunrise service will take place tomorrow morning (Sunday 20 April) on Sandsend beach at 6am. Current forecast is for light cloud.

If you haven't been before, we'll light a bonfire on the beach to welcome the dawn, then churchwardens will carry a flame from the fire to light Easter candles in all the churches in the benefice. It's a short and informal service with some singing, prayers and more unusual elements like throwing stones into the sea.

Everyone's very welcome, and if you don't fancy the early start, we've also got a 9.30am Eucharist up the hill at St Oswald's.

Our 2025 chamber music series in St Oswald's begins again this Saturday evening!

The concert will be at 7pm on Saturday 12th April, and will feature old friends the St Hilda's String Quartet (Tony Mason and Martin Hall violins, Elizabeth Hydes viola and Stephen Restorick cello).

The programme is fairly short and very accessible, themed loosely around 'music you might hear at weddings': Purcell's Trumpet Tune; Handel Largo; Handel Water Music suite no 1; interval; Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary; Pachelbel Canon in D; JS Bach Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring; Mozart Quartet in C k157.

Entry is £7 as usual, and includes a complimentary glass of wine or fruit juice.

It would be lovely to see as many of you as can make it for what promises to be a delightful evening.

And now for something completely different...

As part of Whitby's Musicport Festival, the Tashi Lhunpo monks are doing a series of community performances at venues in the wider area – including St Oswald's!

They'll be performing at Lythe church on Wednesday 16 October at 7.30pm. Pay as you feel (which means entry is free but they would welcome donations) – and we'll be selling tea and cakes for our own restoration appeal.
