Collegiate Church of St Mary, Warwick

Collegiate Church of St Mary, Warwick The Collegiate Church of St Mary is a Church of England parish church in the town of Warwick, England

Our church enshrines much of the history of England, and has great architectural beauty and significance. It is a home of prayer and worship, with a strong musical tradition. St Mary’s was founded on its present site in 1123 by Roger de Newburgh, the Earl of Warwick. The Crypt still remains from the original Norman building, and houses a rare example of a medieval ducking stool. The Chancel, Vestr

y and Chapter House were rebuilt in the Fourteenth Century by Thomas Beauchamp, and this section of the building represents one of the highest peaks of English Gothic architecture. The tomb of Thomas Beauchamp stands in front of the high altar; the tiny figures around its base give a fine depiction of Fourteenth Century English fashion. Fulke Greville's enigmatic monument takes up most of the Chapter House. The glorious Beauchamp Chapel was built in the Fifteenth Century to house the tomb of Richard Beauchamp, the Earl of Warwick and one of the richest and most powerful people in the history of our country. It is a magnificent example of the European ecclesiastical architecture of its time, and ranks as one of this country’s greatest treasures. The Chapel also houses the tombs of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, his brother Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick, and Robert’s son, the “Noble Impe”. The Nave and Tower were destroyed in the great fire of Warwick in 1694, and rebuilt by 1704 by the brothers Francis and William Smith, builder architects of Warwick. The chapel of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment (Royal Regiment of Fusiliers) occupies the North Transept.

⭐️Meet the Team!⭐️

Tim Clark, Volunteer Church Historian & Guide

What’s your role on the team, and what does a typical day look like for you?

As volunteer church historian, I research and curate the church’s history, and support projects that involve a history input. I also have my regular guiding slot in the Beauchamp chapel, and, with my fellow guides, show tour groups around the church.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

Without a doubt, meeting people. I have learned a lot that way! And it is wonderful to be able to work in a building in which you are literally surrounded by centuries of history and in a space that is as complex and innovative as the Beauchamp chapel.

If your job had a movie title, what would it be?

Perhaps the Agony and the Ecstasy? Historical research can be frustrating, but when you work out something significant it’s all worthwhile. And it sometimes feels as though getting to grips with the Beauchamp chapel is as complex a task as painting the ceiling of the Sistine chapel!

What’s a fun fact about you that most people at work don’t know?

I am a wizard (occasionally, and always aided by luck) at table tennis. 🏓

What’s one thing that always makes your workday better?

The satisfaction of welcoming visitors to St Mary's and enhancing their experience of coming here.

Gheymeh, a Persian mutton and split pea stew, was on the menu at our supper club, Hope & Hospitality, this evening.

A good number of St Mary’s regulars enjoyed sitting down with new friends from Iran, Afghanistan & Nigeria, and tucking into a delicious meal together.

Thanks to our chefs for showcasing their skills!

We will be welcoming two organists from overseas to give our next Friday recitals. The first of these, this Friday 19th June, is David Bendix Nielsen, currently the organist at St Mark’s Church in Copenhagen. His programme combines various works by J. S. Bach, including the monumental Prelude & Fugue in E flat, with one by Duruflé. The performance is free with a retiring collection and begins, as always, at 1.15pm.
