One week until our sponsored walk! 🚶‍♀️🚶🚶‍♀️ We're walking 10 miles (with a biscuit break at 3 miles and a cake break at 5 miles!) for Drop-In. Help us to provide food and toiletries for those who come to Drop-In by sponsoring us. See link in the comments below ⬇️

Our twice-a-week Drop-In supports people experiencing rough sleeping, hidden homelessness, and housing instability, alongside those at risk due to poverty, substance use, poor health, and social isolation. We work closely with local partners, including housing support (Riverside), healthcare providers (Bevan Heathcare), substance misuse services (Spectrum), and community organisations, to ensure individuals can access wider support pathways. We provide a holistic, trauma-informed offer that includes hot meals, access to showers and laundry facilities, clothing and food provision, GP drop-in sessions, addiction support access, and health screening. Our approach prioritises dignity, trust, and consistency, enabling engagement with individuals who often do not access statutory services.

A Million Acts of Hope – Wakefield Baptist Church Drop-In & Night Shelter

⭐ At Wakefield Baptist Church we run a community Drop-In and Night Shelter supporting people experiencing homelessness, isolation, poverty and crisis across Wakefield.

⭐ Our Drop-In sessions provide a warm, welcoming and non-judgemental space where guests can access hot meals, refreshments, showers, laundry facilities, practical support, help with benefits and job searches, and simply the opportunity to sit safely with others and be treated with dignity and kindness.

⭐ During periods of severe weather, our Night Shelter opens to provide emergency overnight accommodation, hot food, showers, clothing and a safe place to sleep for people who would otherwise be sleeping rough.

🕊️ What gives us hope is seeing how small acts of kindness can genuinely change someone’s day — and sometimes even their future. A hot meal, clean clothes, a listening ear or simply being greeted by name can remind someone that they matter and are not forgotten. Hope often begins with human connection.

🕊️This work is only possible because of partnership and community support. Alongside volunteers from the church and wider community, we work with organisations including Wakefield Council, Riverside, local charities, food providers, healthcare services and many generous individuals who donate time, food, toiletries and essential supplies.

⭐ One of the most encouraging parts of the Drop-In is watching people slowly rebuild confidence and connection. We have seen guests arrive feeling anxious, isolated and exhausted, then gradually begin chatting with others, joining in activities, accessing support and even volunteering to help others themselves. Moments like someone staying for a game of dominoes, helping serve tea, or returning simply because they finally feel safe and welcomed again remind us why community matters so much.

☕Every cup of tea served, every clean towel offered, every conversation shared and every volunteer hour given is an act of hope.

Our church supports sanctuary seekers and refugees, many of whom come from Iran. We walk alongside them through their asylum journey and the challenges of starting a new life. No matter where they come from, what difficulties they have faced, or why they had to leave their country, we try to create a safe, loving, and welcoming environment for them.

Our activities include learning from one another through Bible study and /or Alpha sessions, sharing meals and getting to know each other. In recent weeks we have prayed and wept tears together for Iran and loved ones caught up in problems there. We aim to create a sense of family and belonging for people who often feel lonely and vulnerable.

Many sanctuary seekers come with deep pain, fear, and difficult memories, and it takes time for them to regain stability and peace. Through support, prayer, teaching, and friendship, we try to encourage them, help them grow in their Christian faith, and understand why they chose this path.

Our aim is to share God’s love in practical ways and remind people that Jesus is always with them, loving them without judgment.

Some of those who come to our Farsi group on Wednesdays attend other churches on Sundays. When you are far from home you sometimes need people who understand your language, culture and issues. Iranian culture is one of hospitality and all are welcome - you don't even have to speak Farsi!

We like to think that our Farsi group is a place of sanctuary - of safety, welcome and hope.
Some people have inspiring stories to tell about God’s protection and guidance throughout their difficult journey of migration and seeking asylum. They describe experiencing God’s presence in moments of danger, loneliness, or hopelessness, and believe that God has been with them and protected them along the way. Others arrive in Wakefield feeling desperately lonely and afraid. Through welcome, friendship and Christian teaching hope is renewed and many are helped to find a new way of living.

🌱 Where do you find hope?

☀️ What has come into being in Jesus was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.
John 1.4-5

✝️ By God's great mercy, God has given us a new birth into a living hope through the rising of Jesus Christ from the dead.
1 Peter 1.3

❤️ Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.
1 John 4.11

☮️ May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15.13

🙏 When you are anxious, by prayer with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4.6-7

Jody recently stood for election for the local council. There is hope in his willingness to step up and offer his skills, experience and care to help his local community. Sadly Jody wasn’t elected this time, but we pray for all those who were elected that they will listen deeply to the needs of all the different people in Wakefield and help everyone to thrive.

Jody’s message ends with a shoutout to carers. We are hugely grateful for the many, many people caring for others. There is hope in every act of care that, day in, day out, brings care, kindness and support to any of us in need to help improve our lives.

Every Wednesday morning at 7.30 a few of us meet to pray at Belle Isle Christian Centre in Wakefield. We use the words of Jesus, that he brought good news to the poor and release for the oppressed. Then we pray for the world, for our nation and city and for people we know. Often we pray for the asylum seekers who are part of our community and for those who come to our church who are homeless or in distress.

Hope comes from caring and praying for people, knowing that God loves us all without limits. We know that God hears our prayers, sometimes answering them through our own actions. And we can see the day with fresh eyes to meet each situation with courage. ‘We begin our day with hope, knowing the day can hold love, kindness, forgiveness and justice.’*

Anyone who asks the church for prayer can be sure that will happen on a Wednesday morning. And all are welcome to join us for our half hour of prayer. Our prayer time resets us towards faith in Jesus like a compass points to true north and we always end prayer not with eyes closed but looking at each other and sharing a blessing for peace.

And this time with video! 👩‍🚀🎥

A Million Acts of Hope 🌟 We're celebrating everyday activities of hope, connection and care that happen at Wakefield Baptist Church. At a time when division can feel loud, the Million Acts of Hope campaign encourages us to shine a light on the people and communities making hope, connection and care happen.

Today we're celebrating Possability.

Possability is a joint churches fellowship group for adults with special learning needs and guests. The group meets monthly and each session starts with the Welcome song. This is followed by a time of sharing news (and jokes!) with drinks and cake. There is much joy (and occasional sorrow) at hearing what folk have been doing since the last meeting. We hear of trips away - Blackpool, Plymouth and Lourdes - sports activities, acting (at the Barnsley Civic) and taking part in the Good Friday Walk of Witness for example. The rest of the meeting is usually linked to a story or passage from the Bible - explored in a multi sensory way through discussion, music, drama, dance, craft and art. Songs are accompanied by sign language. It is clear that no one is limited in expressing their creativity and love for all who attend. The meetings close with a time of shared prayer - for each other and the world - and the Goodbye song.
