Wakefield Cathedral

Wakefield Cathedral Welcome to the official page for Wakefield Cathedral in West Yorkshire, England. The church was re-consecrated by Archbishop William de Melton in 1329.
(415)

This hidden architectural gem has its origins in a pre-Conquest church, but the story of the present building starts circa 1150 when parts of the surviving nave north arcade were first built. This was followed in approximately 1220 by the southern arcade, which is made up of alternating round and octagonal columns. Following the probable collapse of a central tower around 1320, both arcades were heightened, giving their present form, and new multi-shaft columns added.

On Thursday 4th June at 7.00pm, Wakefield Cathedral warmly invites you to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi with Choral Eucharist and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Corpus Christi is one of the great festivals of the Church's year, dedicated to giving thanks for the gift of Christ's Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist. Through word, sacrament, and song, we gather to reflect upon and rejoice in Christ's enduring presence with his people.

We are delighted to welcome Mother Emily Lawrence, Vicar of North and South Elmsall, as our preacher for this year's celebration.

The Cathedral Consort will sing music by Imogen Holst and Jack Hodkinson, one of our bass lay clerks, enriching this solemn and joyful liturgy. The service will conclude with the Procession of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction.

All are warmly welcome to join us for this beautiful act of worship as we give thanks for the sacrament of Christ's love and celebrate the mystery of his presence among us.

As part of Volunteers' Week, today we're celebrating our Churchwardens, Stewards and Welcomers.

Often the first people visitors meet when they arrive at the Cathedral, they offer a warm welcome, provide information and directions, support services and events, and help ensure everyone feels at home.

Their kindness, dedication and willingness to help make a real difference to the experience of everyone who visits the Cathedral.

Thank you for being the friendly face of Wakefield Cathedral. 💙

If you're interested in becoming a Welcomer, we'd love to hear from you. Please email [email protected] or telephone 01924 373923.

🌟 Volunteers' Week 2026 🌟

This week marks Volunteers' Week, a national celebration of the incredible contribution volunteers make to organisations and communities across the UK.

At Wakefield Cathedral, we simply couldn't do what we do without our fantastic volunteers. Every day, volunteers give their time, skills and enthusiasm to help make the Cathedral a place of welcome, worship, learning and community.

From welcoming visitors and supporting services, to helping at events, assisting behind the scenes, caring for our heritage and so much more, our volunteers play a vital role in the life of the Cathedral.

Throughout this week, we'll be introducing you to some of our volunteer groups, sharing a little about what they do and how you can get involved if you'd like to volunteer with us.

Volunteers' Week is also an opportunity for our clergy, staff, congregation and visitors to say a big thank you to everyone who gives their time so generously to support Wakefield Cathedral.

To all our volunteers: thank you for your dedication, kindness and commitment. We are enormously grateful for all that you do.

What a wonderful evening it has been as we welcomed the Grimethorpe Colliery Band back to the Cathedral tonight!

Renowned across the world for their exceptional musicianship, rich brass band heritage, and unforgettable performances, Grimethorpe continue to inspire audiences wherever they play. It was a delight and a privilege to host such an iconic ensemble once again, and they certainly did not disappoint.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us this evening and helped make the concert such a special occasion. Your support for live music and the Cathedral's events programme means so much and helps us continue to bring outstanding performances into the building.

We're already looking ahead, and we're hopeful that this won't be the last visit. Keep an eye on our page for future announcements as we hope to welcome the Grimethorpe Colliery Band back to the Cathedral in 2027!
