The writings of Phillip Sherrard have had a great influence on me , those of us who deplore the desecration of the earth for profit should read his works , because our world view and the view of how we see ourselves goes very deep into our souls and has become distorted . . This is an article by his wife and publisher Denise Harvey who was a great help to me when I curated Divine Dimensions for at Peter’s Church Oare . We organised an evening of music and poetry and it was as a homage to the man who on his death bed was still translating the Philokalia into English . It was then that I learnt that Philip Sherrard was my Greek teacher’s husband was Philip Sherrard
Godfather .. The world is very small because no doubt the watering holes are few and far between .Robin Cormack one of the curators of the fantastic exhibition ‘Byzantium’at the RA in 2008 opened our installation at St Peter’s .at the time he was head of the Byzantine studies at the Courtauld Institute and he explained to me that his interest in icons and Byzantium was initiated by his Latin and Greek teacher Philip Sherrard who used to go to his mother’s house where his first wife who was Greek would forage for dandelion leaves . So Iconographers owe quite a lot to Philip Sherrard and his publisher and wife Denise Harvey.

Denise Harvey is a small independent publisher, working from Evia (or Euboea), a large island not very far from the Attica region. Born in the UK, she moved to Greece more than fifty years ago, enchanted by its history and natural beauty. As she says in her site, living there made her realise that ....

Monreale Cathedral with the St Thomas of Canterbury mosaic , the wonderful church built by George of Antioch and the exquisite Palatine Chapel , ( unfortunately the window was removed and a much later mosaic was added)
This chapel of the Norman King Roger II is so special because it shows what can happen when different cultures work together . This was Sicily’s golden age where Greeks , Normans Jews and Saracens lived in harmony and nowhere shows this harmony better than Rogers chapel , Norman building , Byzantine mosaic and beautiful Saracen woodwork .
