Three members of Truro Cathedral’s music team took on and completed the Rame Head Half Marathon last weekend, raising funds to support the cathedral’s thriving music programme.

James Anderson-Besant, director of music, alongside assistant director Andrew Wyatt and organ scholar Alfie Beston, completed the demanding coastal race on 13 June, bringing to a close months of preparation and training.

“We were not just running for the challenge. Every mile was about supporting the future of cathedral music and the opportunities it creates.”

On Saturday 4 July, Three Spires Singers and Abbey Brass present a concert of joyful summer music for choir with organ and brass. Parry's famous anthem "I was Glad", which has been sung at every coronation since 1902, opens the concert as truly one of the most majestic and uplifting pieces. Dvořák's "Mass in D" is a wonderfully contrasting work, with exuberance and poise, full of wonderful romantic harmony.

For this, they will be joined by young, talented soloists from among the cathedral's choral scholars. Organ and brass will join in Guilmant's joyous "Grand Choeur Dialogué", and you will hear one of the most well-known organ pieces, "Widor's Toccata", and hear the choir sing Dupré's "Laudate". Vierne's epic "Messe Solennelle" provides some French grandeur, with a particularly apocalyptic 'Kyrie'. Rutter's "Psalm 150", written for Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee in 2002, is a bright, fun, dancing work, reminiscent of the composer's famous 'Gloria'.

The fourth concert of the 2026 Tuesday Live series is definitely not to be missed! 🎶

Outstanding violinists Molly Leigh and Jenny Wells will be playing Bach's Double Concerto, accompanied by a string ensemble. They are then joined by Orianna Mossman and members of three choirs singing movements of Vivaldi's Gloria.

We then move on 250 years or more to the late 20th/early 21st century to hear choral arrangements of the Beatles' Here Comes the Sun, Amarillo and Russell Pascoe's Celtic Blessing. The eclectic programme is devised and directed by Martin Palmer.

These free concerts offer a chance to hear just a sample of the wealth of musical talent existing in Cornwall. There will be a retiring collection for Truro Cathedral Music, which supports music in the cathedral, particularly Truro's wonderful Cathedral Choir.

All lunchtime concerts last for around 45 minutes, so they offer a perfect break in your shopping trip or your working day 🙏
