Epiphany House

Epiphany House Nestled on the outskirts of Truro, Epiphany House is a sanctuary of tranquillity, ideal for conferences, retreats, and reflection in the heart of Cornwall.

Epiphany House, a Conference and Retreat Centre set on the outskirts of Truro. The House is run by the Epiphany Trust, an ecumenical Christian charity. This historic building provides large and versatile facilities in a strategic location. The house offers a variety of meeting rooms, overnight accommodation and a chapel, and is widely used both by individuals, church and public sector groups for a

wide range of activities. These include: meetings, training courses, quiet days and retreats, rehearsal space for local music and dance groups, meeting space for art groups and various clubs, consulting rooms for counsellors and therapists, and a venue for special celebrations. Our aim is to make the fullest and most effective use of these facilities to. We are committed to offering:
• A wide range of facilities to the whole community
• A centre for spiritual retreat and renewal
• A resource for Cornish churches to use for Christian Development

We endeavour to offer excellent and warm hospitality and the highest level of service. As a charity we are particularly concerned with helping those who are disadvantaged and we therefore offer special rates and consideration to those who would otherwise not be able to take advantage of our facilities, or who are seeking respite, perhaps from caring for an old or sick relative. We have a partnership with St Petroc’s Society (a charity supporting the homeless) and we have given them space to create a kitchen garden for re-habilitation and produce for their clients. We hope to extend this project to include other charities that may benefit. The house is set in beautiful grounds which are enjoyed by our many visitors and members of the public who regularly walk through them, enjoying the views and the rich variety of wildlife in the grounds. The house is often described by our visitors as a haven of peace, where they can find rest, silence, healing, and solace in their often hectic lives. Epiphany House is one of the largest houses in the City of Truro and is of considerable historic interest. It has served as a vicarage, a Bishop's palace, a boys' school and as a home for the Community of the Epiphany (an Anglican religious order). A number of famous people have passed through our doors, including John Wesley who stayed in the House during one of his preaching tours. It was also home of Edward White Benson, the first Bishop of Truro (and later Archbishop of Canterbury) who devised here the well know Christmas service of nine lessons and carols. Consider The Birds of the Air - Letting the Lord Speak Through Creation with Fr Gimour Mcdermott

Epiphany House quiet days are an opportunity for prayer, reflection, and silence, fostering deeper connection with God.
Our May quiet day is titled Consider The Birds of the Air - Letting the Lord Speak Through Creation. This quiet day offers an opportunity to step back from the demands of daily life and spend time in prayerful reflection amidst the tranquil surroundings of Epiphany House.

Through talks, personal reflection, and time in the natural environment, we will explore how the Lord speaks to us through his creation, asking questions like, "How have you enjoyed my creation?" Using Jesus’ words, "Consider the birds of the air," we will reflect on God’s care and provision for each of us, seeing how creation itself reveals his goodness. Inspired by the words, "I am the bread of life," we will also consider how the Lord sustains and nourishes us for the journey of faith.

The day will include moments of quiet after each reflection, space to share insights with others, and will conclude with a short time of prayer together. This is a chance to draw near to God, listen for His voice, and find refreshment for your soul.

Father Gilmour McDermott recently retired after over 50 years of devoted service as a Catholic priest. Ordained in 1973, Fr. Gilmour has served in parishes across Surrey, Sussex, and Devon before coming to Cornwall in 1999. His ministry in the Duchy began in St Ives, later moving to Truro, and finally to Liskeard, where he cared for four parishes, including Saltash, Torpoint, and Sclerder Abbey. Fr. Gilmour is widely respected for his pastoral care, his ability to foster welcoming communities, and his commitment to the Christian families of the Holy Land, for which he was honoured as a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre.

20th of June 2025 10:00AM – 16:00PM £30.00

Epiphany House quiet days are an opportunity for prayer, reflection, and silence, fostering deeper connection with God.

The Cornish seas surround us and are part of the Celtic heritage. We hope for plain sailing through life in peace and tranquillity but as we journey on disappointments and failures can threaten to swamp us. We feel in danger of losing our way and the Christian hope within us too. Cast adrift we lose sight of the safe harbour as choppy waters threaten to toss on to strange shores.

This quiet day offers the opportunity to reflect personally on such experiences and what they add to our discipleship, to discover afresh the truth of Isaiah’s words, that “in rest and quietness shall be your strength” (Isaiah 30:15). The calming music of Simeon Wood will help us to pause as we seek the shelter of the psalms and the gospels to find the confidence to point the rudder and discover fresh wind to fill our sails once more.

Lynda was Canon Pastor at Truro Cathedral which she combined with parish ministry. She continues in retirement to be a Rural Dean in the Duchy and a trustee of the Sheldon retreat centre.

£30.00 to include refreshments and a light lunch.

Epiphany House, once home to the Sisters of the Community of Epiphany, has long been a beacon of spiritual dedication and shared community life.

On the 6th of January 2025, during the Feast of the Epiphany Service in the house chapel, the Rt Rev Bishop Hugh Nelson welcomed us into a new chapter for Epiphany House through the commissioning of a reimagined Community of the Epiphany, a new monastic community for Cornwall.

The charism of the Community of the Epiphany is summed up as follows: We are an ecumenical Christian community in Cornwall who dedicate ourselves to prayer and to service. In 2025, a number of explorers will take on a probationary rule of life, to be reviewed at the year’s end. This year of discernment, exploration, and commitment will help uncover the community’s unique callings.

The community will be led by the Rev Dave Wheeler as the prior, the Rev Judith Wheatley as the sub-prior, and Alan Wallace as the chancellor. The Rt Rev Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Bishop of Dover, and the Rev Ian Hoskins will act as visitors to the community.

The commissioning of the community coincides with the launch of a new rhythm of prayer for Epiphany House. Starting from the 7th of January 2025, there will be daily morning prayer held in the chapel at 10:00AM, to which all are warmly invited to attend. A short 10-minute silence will also be observed at lunch time.

Alan Wallace CEO shares: “As we embark on this new chapter, the commissioning of the reimagined Community of the Epiphany represents a deepening of our commitment to prayer, service, and community life here in Cornwall. This new monastic community will be a space for discernment, exploration, and dedication to God’s calling, and we look forward to seeing how it will grow and shape the future of Epiphany House. I invite you all to join us in this journey of prayer and service, beginning with our daily rhythms of prayer that will bring us together as a community.”
