François Pineau-Benois & Adam Szokolay:
Golden Age of Old Russian Music: Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Glazunov
Sat 9th May 2026, 7.30pm, St. Botolph’s Church, Trunch.

The Pineau-Benois – Szokolay Duet, winners of the grand prix at the 2019 Pro Music International Competition (Paris), is highly regarded by the public in France, Hungary and other countries: the musicians are qualified as “young virtuosos” by the Figaroscope, complimented for the expressiveness of their playing by the Journal Francophone de Budapest. Their concert at the Salle Cortot in November 2019 ended with a standing ovation from the audience. In March 2020 they performed live on Dutch Radio from Concertgebouw chamber hall.

In March 2022 they received a standing ovation at the Francophone Festival in Budapest and recorded a programme of French Romantic music at Hungarian Radio Bartok.

During the seasons 2022-2023-2024 they were acclaimed in the Cortot hall in Paris and the Chamber Hall of Liszt Memorial Museum in Budapest. The musicians manage to harmoniously combine their respective heritage of Hungarian, French and Russian music continuing Liszt, Debussy, Ravel and Bartok traditions.
The Duet is composed of musicians trained in prestigious European schools: the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) for the violinist François Pineau-Benois and the Liszt Academies of Budapest and Weimar for the pianist Adam Szokolay

St Nicks Arts Centre: The NY Met – Eugene Onegin on 8th May @ 6:30pm

A timeless story of love, yearning, and the tragic consequences of youthful pride, Eugene Onegin holds the dual honour of being one of the most beloved works of both Russian opera and Russian literature.

The opera is based on Alexander Pushkin’s iconic verse novel, which is a classic of Russian literature.

Following her acclaimed 2024 company debut in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, when critics hailed her as “a fiercely intelligent and captivating singer” (The New York Times) and an artist “seemingly able to sing just about any role she chooses” (The Associated Press), world-renowned soprano Asmik Grigorian returns to the Met stage to star as Tatiana in Eugene Onegin.

Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece features soaring melodies, rich ensembles, buoyant dance numbers, and some of the most striking vocal solos in the repertory.

The Met’s evocative production, directed by Tony Award–winner Deborah Warner, “offers a beautifully detailed reading of … Tchaikovsky’s lyrical romance” (The Telegraph).

This screening is preceded by an optional fish & chip supper from the Fish Shop in Roughton (or bring your own food) that will be delivered at 6:30pm, the screening will start around 6:45pm. We will have a licensed bar at this event!

St Nicks Arts Centre: National Theatre Live – All My Sons - 1st May @ 7pm

On May 1st at 7pm in St Nicholas, Swafield we'll screen ‘All My Sons’ by Arthur Miller.

Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths) feature in a five-star, triumphantly acclaimed new production of Arthur Miller’s classic play, from visionary director Ivo Van Hove (A View from the Bridge).

One family, the heart of the American dream. When wartime delivers profits for Joe, it comes at a price when his partner is charged with criminal manufacturing deals, and his eldest son goes missing in action. Will peacetime bring peace of mind, or will he be confronted by the consequence of his actions?

Filmed live from the West End, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You), Tom Glynn-Carney (House of the Dragon), and Hayley Squires (I, Daniel Blake) also feature in this disturbingly prescient play.

This screening is preceded by optional fish & chips supper. The food will be delivered at 7pm and the screening will start around 7:20pm.

Nigel Havers to introduce film night: “A Passage to India”: 10th April at St Nicks Arts Centre

On 10th Apr St Nicks Arts Centre in Swafield will be hosting an extra special evening including a screening of EM Forster's award winning A Passage To India with an introduction and Q&A session with Nigel Havers.

An optional Indian meal will be available, provided by our friends at Labone in North Walsham, winners of the Bangladesh Caterers Award for Best Indian and Bangladeshi Restaurant in the East of England Region. You are welcome to bring your own food.

A Passage to India is a 1984 epic period drama film written, directed and edited by David Lean. The screenplay is based on the 1924 novel of the same name by E. M. Forster and the 1960 play adaptation by Santha Rama Rau. The film stars Peggy Ashcroft, Judy Davis, James Fox, Alec Guinness, Nigel Havers, and Victor Banerjee.

Set in the 1920s, in the British Raj, the film follows the interactions of Dr. Aziz, Mrs. Moore, Adela Quested, Ronny Heaslop, and Richard Fielding in the fictional city of Chandrapore, which is split between the British elite and the native underclass. However, their relationships become strained due to cultural tensions and personal misunderstandings.

This was Lean's final film and marked his return to directing after a 14-year hiatus since Ryan's Daughter (1970). Upon its release, A Passage to India was met with widespread critical acclaim, with some praising it as Lean's finest since Lawrence of Arabia. The film received 11 nominations at the 57th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Davis. It won Best Supporting Actress for Ashcroft, making her, at 77, the oldest actress to win the award, and Best Original Score for Maurice Jarre, his third award in that category.

The film has a PG age classification. You can view the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxaPT6UbdAE
