AFGHANISTAN REFUGEE CRISIS

Dear All,
Earlier today I spoke to a lovely lady in Daventry who has registered as a collection point through the charity care4calais for donations of items to help the 20,000 refugees who are coming to this country from Afghanistan. It would be wonderful if we were able to help in some way.

The items they urgently need are as follows:

Baby equipment eg. Strollers, slings, blankets, in new or excellent condition
New toiletries or wash bags
New nappies, baby cream, wipes, nappy bags, baby toys, teethers.
Good quality picture books
New hairbrushes, combs
Men’s clothing (especially S & M sizes)
Men’s trainers
New underwear
Backpacks
Unlocked smartphones
Unlocked tablets
Excellent quality practical women’s and children’s items (limited quantities)

They would also like knitted ‘Trauma Teddies’ to give to children who have suffered trauma - the pattern is available online if you google ‘trauma teddies’ and apparently not difficult if you can knit!

If you are able to help with any of the items listed please message me and I will arrange to collect them and deliver to Daventry.

God bless and thank you
Revd Sue

Hello Everyone.

We have only lived in Adstone for a year but love it and we would love to help to bring the village together to find new and exciting ways to help to fund our lovely village church. We don’t want to form a committee, just an informal group of villagers with ideas and enthusiasm who are prepared to get involved.

To get the ball rolling we would like to invite anyone who would like to help to a cheese and wine evening at 7.30 on Thursday 15th July to have a chat about how we can work together.

Please RSVP via WhatsApp or call us on 01327 862342 so we know how much wine (and soft drinks) to get.

Lockdown Reflection, on behalf of Reverend Sue:

Watching the recent snow falling I was reminded of a saying I heard a few years ago; “When God freezes water snowflakes fall; when humans freeze water they make ice cubes”. I’m no scientist but apparently no two snowflakes are ever the same because they evolve as they fall through the air. They might just look like white blobs but even two snowflakes floating side-by-side will pass through different levels of vapour and humidity to create a unique shape.

Ice cubes on the other hand are just uniform blocks and this can be quite a good metaphor for human society. It seems we feel safer and more comfortable surrounding ourselves with people who talk, dress and act as we do – people ‘like me’. This leads to discriminations of race, class, gender, religion and many other divisions as seen in the world today.

But like snowflakes people are all unique and we should celebrate this diversity, because we are all created in the image of God and each person is loved by him more than we can ever imagine. Sadly, although we are all made in the image of God we find it impossible to act like him. There is only one person ever who has done that and that person is Jesus, who by his life and teaching showed us a better way of behaving towards each other.

So rather than form ‘in’ groups or build walls of separation let’s make an effort to work for a Jesus-shaped world free of divisions. How good it would be if human society was more like a snowball than an ice cube where all people, each one loved and valued for their uniqueness, would stick together.

Lockdown reflection 3, on behalf of Reverend Sue:

It seems that lots of people have spent the past year taking up hobbies and pastimes to help fill the time. Last spring and summer it was gardening and baking bread which were particularly popular, keeping hens was another one, and some turned to crocheting and knitting and other handicrafts which to someone like me who struggles to even sew on a button seems really impressive!

Personally I turned to jigsaws, along with many others it would seem as they were difficult to find for sale in lockdown1! I like the 1000 piece puzzles and am particularly fond of the Wasgij variety which, as their name suggests, are back-to-front jigsaws. In these you don’t follow the scene on the front of the box but have to complete the picture which the people shown on the front of the box are seeing, which gives an even harder dimension to usual puzzles - difficult as you have no picture to use as a guide.

It strikes me that a wasgij can be a bit like life really – made up of lots of small bits which all fit together in some way but with no guide to follow! It would be helpful if we were able to see the big picture for our lives but luckily God knows what it is and we have to trust him to guide us through. As a proverb in the Bible says: “The human mind plans the way, but the Lord directs the steps” (Proverbs 16:9)

Another wonderful reflection on behalf of Reverend Sue:

Lockdown Reflection 2

One of the hardest things, it seems, of lockdown, is the loneliness which so many people are feeling, which this time round is made even worse by the long, dark evenings. Even if our cupboards are full of food and our houses warm, and plenty aren’t so lucky, the impact of having no one to talk to for days or even weeks at a time can be very difficult to cope with. I am fortunate because although my husband is out at work all day he is at home in the evenings so I have someone to talk to. Many people, particularly the elderly or those who live alone and are having to work from home, are not so fortunate and the feeling of loneliness can be overpowering.

One thing I have noticed since I came to be your Rector is the strong sense of community which exists in our villages and I know that you are doing a great job in looking out for each other. Just to be a kind listening ear or to make a special effort to regularly phone someone who you know is alone can help tremendously, so keep up the good work!
It’s also important to remember that however lonely you feel, you are never really alone. God knows each one of us intimately, down to the number of hairs we have on our head, and he wants to be in relationship with us all.

Through Jesus, God has promised to be with us always; ‘And remember, I am with you always until the end of the age’ (Matt 28:20).

A first reflection for you all, on behalf of Reverend Sue:

Lockdown Reflection 1
I wonder if, like me, you’ve spotted that just two weeks after the shortest day the afternoons are already staying noticeably lighter past four o’clock? I love that feeling of hope it brings – that the light is increasing and the darkness getting less, and spring is on its way.

We all need light to survive and it gives a sense of wellbeing which is partly why a daily walk during lockdown is encouraged. I also think that the fact that many people put up their Christmas lights earlier than usual during the November lockdown as well as the beautifully lit Advent windows which shone throughout some of our villages, were really positive reminders that light does overcome the darkness!

I’m afraid I wasn’t organised enough to put my Christmas lights up early and now we have reached Epiphany (and a new lockdown!) when traditionally they should come down I’ve decided that I’m going to enjoy them for a bit longer. After all, the church calendar marks the end of Christmas as Candlemas Day, 2nd February, the day when we celebrate Jesus’ presentation in the temple, and many churches leave their Nativity cribs up until this date. It also means I can ignore for a bit longer the dust and pine needles!

But as we pack away our Christmas lights and decorations until next Christmas, it’s important to remember that the true light of the world is still with us. Jesus said; ‘I am the light of the world’ (John 8:12) He came as a light in the darkness of our world, to guide and comfort us through whatever life brings.

A message from Reverend Sue: Remembrance Sunday

This will include a reading of the names from the villages’ war memorials and a two minute silence.
