The Parish Council have arranged for the safe swim buoys to be at Widdick Chine again this year and will be out this week. Delays have been down to the weather, although glorious now the beginning of May was not so nice. The launching buoys at Colwell will not be repeated this year as this did not work how the Parish Council wanted them too. It is also understood that Freshwater Parish Council will have their safe swim buoys out at Colwell next week as well.

UPDATE SOUTHERN WATER. FRIDAY 22nd May.

We wanted to provide a further update following yesterday’s incident at the Madeira Road, Totland pumping station. Based on the latest information available, there is now no impact to bathing water quality and beach signage has been removed. The Environment Agency has also updated the information on their website to reflect this.

As we head into the bank holiday weekend, we will continue to have teams on site monitoring the situation and manually operating the pumping station to mitigate any further issues while a permanent fix is put in place.

We understand how important this coastline is for residents, visitors and local businesses, and we will continue to keep you updated after the weekend.

6.00pm THURSDAY 21st MAY. FURTHER UPDATES FROM SOUTHERN WATER.

further update following this morning’s incident at the Madeira Road, Totland pumping station.

Initial water quality testing, alongside the tidal modelling we shared earlier today, suggests that the impact of the spill on bathing waters has now passed. These early results are reassuring - more detailed laboratory testing is still underway and will take a little longer to come back.

Our observations on site throughout the day have also been reassuring, and we have kept the Environment Agency fully informed as our response has progressed.

We understand how important this coastline is - particularly as we approach the bank holiday weekend. We have been advised that the bathing warning signage will be taken down tomorrow morning (Friday 22nd May). We’ll continue to keep you updated to confirm this.

SOUTHERN WATER UPDATE -THUSDAY 21st May

Following our earlier update regarding the discharge at Madeira Road, Totland, we would like to provide further information. We have informed the Environment Agency and the beaches between Totland and Colwell Bay are currently closed.

Based on our tidal modelling, we believe that the impact of the spill on bathing water has now passed. Specialist contractors are currently carrying out water sampling to confirm this and will share the results as soon as they are available.

Our teams carried out inspections of the beach and surrounding areas this morning. We identified evidence of discharge on manhole covers along the coastal paths only. There is no visible evidence of pollution on the main beach itself.

Dedicated teams are currently on site undertaking a thorough clean of all affected areas, including the coastal paths, to ensure the site is returned to its normal condition as quickly as possible.

We continue to manually operate the Madeira Road pumping station as a precaution while our investigation into the cause of the failure is ongoing.

We appreciate the concern this incident has caused and we will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
