ChristChurch Tilehurst

ChristChurch Tilehurst A family-friendly and welcoming local church meeting Sundays, 10.30am, at Westwood Farm Junior School If we can help with anything, please get in touch.

In November 2011 Carey Baptist Church planted a congregation in the Tilehurst community. Each Sunday morning since then we meet for a 10.30am service to worship Jesus in song, prayer, and Communion and to hear him speak to us through the Bible. We also aim to be a loving, welcoming community, who care for each other, serving with our gifts and doing good in our community. Our services seek to be f

amily-friendly and include a Sunday Scool (ages 3-11) and creche. All are welcome, whoever you are, whatever your background.

💦 **WHAT IS BAPTISM?**
Baptism vividly displays the gospel of Jesus, showing what He’s done, how we’re united with Him, and the blessings we receive through faith and baptism.

👶🏻 **BAPTISM IS LIKE A BIRTH**
In the Bible, water often signals new life: the world was formed from water (Gen. 1:2; 2Pt. 3:5), Noah entered a renewed world after the flood (Gen. chpt8), and Israel began anew after crossing the Red Sea (Ex. 14) and Jordan River (Josh. 3), leaving slavery behind. Baptism symbolizes new life in Jesus, rising from the water as He rose from the dead, leaving the old life for the new.

⚰️ **BAPTISM IS LIKE A BURIAL**
Immersion in water reflects Jesus’ death and burial. He died for our sins, offering forgiveness. In baptism, Christians unite with His death and resurrection, receiving forgiveness and new life.

🛁 **BAPTISM IS LIKE A BATH**
Washing in the Bible signifies spiritual cleansing. Baptism represents Jesus removing the stain of sin, shame, and guilt from our souls (Acts 22:16).

💍 **BAPTISM IS LIKE BETROTHAL**
Like a wedding ring symbolizing love and commitment, baptism marks entry into the New Covenant with Christ. It seals His promises of adoption, love, forgiveness, and eternal life.

⛪ **BAPTISM IS ABOUT BELONGING**
Jesus instructed the church to baptize believers “in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” Baptism into God’s triune name means belonging to Him and His family, the Church, which welcomes new Christians.

🫵🏼 **BAPTISM INVITES YOU**
Those baptized find new life in Jesus, trusting and following Him. You’re invited to come to Jesus, finding forgiveness, hope, and new life, regardless of your past.

“Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” (Acts 2:38)

Baptisms - Sun 7th Sept, 2025, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvRaHnN4FaY
💦WHAT IS BAPTISM? Read more 👇
Baptism is an amazing display of the good news (or the “gospel”) about Jesus. It is a very rich and vivid demonstration of what Jesus has done for us, how we are joined to him, and what we receive from him when we believe and are baptised.

👶🏻BAPTISM IS LIKE A BIRTH. Water and new life often go together in the Bible: the world was created “out of water” (Gen. 1:2; 2Pt. 3:5); Noah entered a renewed world after the flood (Gen. 8:1ff.); Israel entered a new land and life with God after crossing the Red Sea (Ex. 14) and Jordan river (Josh. 3), leaving behind their old life of slavery in Egypt. We have new life through faith in Jesus who rose again from the dead which is symbolised in baptism as we emerge from the water. Through water, we leave behind the old to walk in the new.

⚰️BAPTISM IS LIKE A BURIAL. As a person is covered in water, we see a picture of the death and burial of Jesus. He died in our place, paying the price for our sins so that we can be free and forgiven. A Christian who trusts Jesus and is baptised unites themselves to Him in his death and resurrection, receiving his forgiveness and new life.

🛁BAPTISM IS LIKE A BATH. In the Bible, washing was a sign of being spiritually clean. It’s not a physical wash, but when the stain of sin deep in our souls, with all its shame and guilt, is taken away by Jesus (Acts 22:16).

💍BAPTISM IS LIKE BETROTHAL. A husband or wife give a ring “as a sign of our love” with the promise of love and commitment in the covenant of marriage. A ring seals those promises to a specific person, reminding them of this covenant love. Similarly, in baptism, we ceremonially enter into the New Covenant in Christ, receiving the seal of his promise of adoption, love, forgiveness and eternal life.

⛪︎BAPTISM IS ABOUT BELONGING. Jesus commanded his church to baptise believers “in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit”. Being baptised into God’s triune name is to belong to him and his new family, the Church. Therefore, baptism is when the Church gets to welcome new Christians and acknowledge that they truly belong now.

🫵🏼BAPTISM BIDS YOU TO COME TOO. Those being baptised today have found new life in Jesus and now love, trust and follow Him. But there is also an invitation to you today: come to Jesus too and find forgiveness, hope and new life, no matter who you are, where you come from or what you’ve done.

“Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” (Acts 2:38)

**WE NEED A GREATER 'VE DAY'**
This week the world is commemorating Victory in Europe and the virtual end of the Second World War. As great a victory as it was, it could not end war, or evil, or suffering, or death; it could not unite the world or bring peace to the nations. We continue to live in a divided world, after just 80 years, peace in Europe is over, and there are rumours of yet another "world war"!

But Christianity shows us a greater victory over sin, evil and death, that brings ultimate justice and eternal peace for the whole world. It comes in a surprising and subversive way: not through a mighty force that can crush the darkness, but through weakness, humility, and sacrifice. It comes through Jesus, a mighty Lion who humbled himself to become like a Lamb - meek and gentle, and offered up in sacrifice for the world. He TRIUMPHS through suffering, setting us free. And so Jesus alone is worthy of ALL praise and honour and glory. He is the true victor we must commemorate, celebrate, and worship!

This then has become the way of all Christians in this present world, who walk the path of sacrifice and humility that triumphs over evil.
