MEMORIAL CANDLES EVENT 2024

Every year there is an opportunity to remember a loved one on Christmas Eve with a votive candle bearing their name.
Viewing of lit votive candles takes place in St John's Church, Tideswell on CHRISTMAS EVE from 9.30 p.m. - 11 p.m.
To order votives, please place your donation in an envelope, stating your own name & clearly printed with the name of the person/s to be remembered. Only one name will fit onto each votive candle.
Minimum donation 50p per candle.
Post us your order (cheques payable to St John the Baptist Church) or pop through the letterbox at Saint Elmo, Sherwood Road, Tideswell.
Orders must be placed by Tuesday 10th December.

Crowd funding link information for the Lighting Appeal
for The Cathedral of the Peak
The Cathedral of the Peak (St John the Baptist Church) in Tideswell is Grade I listed and one of the most important churches in England and is of National importance for English Heritage. It is unusual in that it has never been altered on the outside and therefore looks as it would have looked in the 14th century. It is central to the life of the village as it hosts many events as well as regular worship. It also attracts over 30,000 visitors from all over the UK and abroad which supports local businesses. The lights and cabling are failing and the Parochial Church Council are raising funds to rewire and replace all the lights with a new LED energy efficient system. We have raised over 80% of the £118,549 needed and hope to get the rest with the crowdfunding. The campaign has attracted some support quickly, (over 20 pledges in the first two weeks) indicating the importance of this part of our heritage. Your support would be much appreciated. Every donation helps to raise the profile on the internet attracting more pledges. If you can circulate this information to others and put it up on Facebook or X it will be very helpful.

Simon and Gillian’s farewell service for the whole parish will happen this sunday (8th October) at 10.30am and followed by a bring and share finger food lunch at St John’s Institute (behind the church). There will be well known hymns, brass bands, bells, and photos and time to say goodbeye. We’d love to say thank you for sharing our ten years here, so do join us even if you can only come for part of the time.
(Finger food contributions can be dropped off at the Church Institute before the service.)

In order to celebrate my 85th year and do something useful, I will be making a sponsored hang gliding flight to raise money for our church in Tideswell. The 700 year old St John's the Baptist church is known as the "Cathedral of the Peak" and is one of the largest churches in the Peak District. The church electric wiring is dangerous and is in urgent need of replacement, but such a big job will cost over £200,000, hence deciding to do something to help raise funds.

Together with instructor Judy Leden MBE (who also lives in Tideswell) I will be towed behind a microlight aircraft to over 2000 feet and then we will be released to glide for up to 20 minutes. We have to find a day with suitable weather sometime in May for the flight.
Any sponsorship, even a small amount, will be greatly appreciated. Sponsorship donations can be given directly to Sonia, or placed in an envelope marked ‘Sonia’s Adventure’ and posted in the big white collecting box near the entrance to St John’s Tideswell.

2pm, Good Friday, Service starts outside Fountain Square Church, processing to St John's Church Yard, ending with words and music inside the Church.
9.30am Easter Sunday Celebration at St John's Church followed at 11am by the Wakes Easter Egg Hunt in the Churchyard.

The 9.30am service at Tideswell Church has been cancelled on Sunday 12th March due to heavy snow and icy conditions. Our 12noon Zoom service will go ahead, please contact the Vicarage if you want more details. A decision about the evening service at Wormhill Church will be taken on Sunday.

Libby Lane, the Bishop of Derby, is our guest at Breakfast Café this Sunday (February 5th). Starting around 9.30am upstairs at The Institute, behind Tideswell Church, you are very warmly invited to come and meet her, to enjoy coffee and breakfast goodies, and the family-friendly welcome of café church.
