Why Use Sofas in a Crematorium or Funeral Chapel?

We’re often asked about the use of sofas in crematoria and funeral chapels — and why they’ve become such a popular feature.
Many of the projects we work on aim to make the front rows of seating stand out as a more comfortable, personal space for families who have booked the chapel to say their goodbyes. This is often achieved by installing one or two rows of colour-coordinated sofas at the front of the seating area.
These sofas are designed to be both supportive and comfortable and most importantly, set at the correct height for elderly or less mobile mourners. Our modular, linkable sofa systems can also be easily rearranged or reconfigured to accommodate wheelchair users, ensuring accessibility and flexibility for every service.
Sofas can be retrofitted into most chapels with minimal disruption — typically by removing the pew frontals and a couple of rows of existing chairs.
Many installations take place alongside redecoration and recarpeting works, helping to create a softer, more contemporary and welcoming atmosphere within the chapel.

Three years ago, our choir and sanctuary furniture was delivered to St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. Her Majesty The Queen saw the designs, but sadly did not see the completed pieces. We are proud that Windsor was able to showcase our Yorkshire, British-made church furniture to President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania.

We always love receiving photos of our furniture in use—whether it’s from a delivery made years ago, showing that the piece is still as stunning as the when it was delivered or from a recent installation.

Last month, we had the pleasure of delivering a bespoke altar to St. John’s Church in Dumfries. They kindly sent a lovely letter to everyone at Treske involved here with the design, making and delivery of the altar, and have shared some beautiful photos with us!

Workshop Tour with St Mary's Ashwell

Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of welcoming members of the PCC from marys church, St Mary’s Church, Ashwell to our showroom and workshops here in Thirsk.

In 2024, St Mary’s Ashwell commissioned Treske to design and manufacture a bespoke set of choir furniture, including solid oak choir frontals, benches, adjustable music stand and podium for their Grade 1 listed, historic church.

It was a delight to show the group around our facility and allow them access to see their furniture actually taking shape. We now eagerly await the delivery date in April 2025, when we can see the new furniture take pride of place in this beautiful church building in North Hertfordshire.

We have included some photos of this visit together with some additional images of the bespoke furniture as it makes its way through our workshops.

When our customers commission furniture for their church or crematorium, personalisation is often a key request.

We can work with our clients to create a 3-D version of their logo or emblem and this can then be carved into the solid wood panels on the furniture. This creates truly unique pieces of furniture which can be tied in really closely to the spaces and buildings in which they sit.
Treske can draw up pretty much any shape or emblem using specialist 3-D CAD modelling software and then cut this shape into the timber using a 5-axis CNC router. The outline shape is then smoothed and finished by hand to give the finished emblem.
Additionally, we can also offer the option to include interchangeable multi-faith symbols on things such as lecterns and catafalques—allowing you to honour and accommodate diverse faiths and traditions.
Our goal here at Treske is to provide furniture that is not only functional, but also meaningful and tailored to the specific needs of your space.

Crafted to perfection—every detail tells a story. For Christ Church College, Oxford, study room desk surfaces inlaid with marmoleum provide a great working surface. Finials finish the top of the legs reflecting the personalisation of the design to the College.

Treske are really proud of the designs we have supplied to some of the finest and best known UK Universities and Colleges with designs for desks, chairs, dining tables, occasional tables, bedroom furniture and more all manufactured in our North Yorkshire workshops.

Projects of any size can be tackled with the ability to fully furnish an entire new build student accommodation block through to maybe just refurnishing single or groups of rooms over a period of time.
