Choral Evensong

6.30pm on Sunday 7 June.

Choral Evensong has been described as a gem in the crown of the Church of England. In one form or another it has been sung since the fifteenth century. The present liturgy has been used since the Book of Common Prayer was introduced in 1662.

The service provides space for the congregation to meditate upon the words of scripture which permeate the liturgy. The congregation is invited to join in singing the hymns and to stand to say the Creed. The canticles will be sung by the choir to a choral setting by Thomas Morley, the psalm to a traditional Anglican chant, and the preces and responses are by Thomas Tallis. The congregation is invited to remain seated while the choir sing.
