On this day in 1936 the second Tewkesbury pilgrimage took place at Tewkesbury Abbey. The Church Times reported that nearly 1,000 pilgrims attended the High Mass at 12 noon, and during the afternoon there were various talks and discussion groups. At 4pm a procession of clergy and servers formed up in Abbey House garden and processed along Gloucester Road to the Abbey.

The photographs shared are from the Tewkesbury Register, Gloucester Journal, Cheltenham Chronicle and the Sunday Mirror.

Thought for the week from Reverend Andrew Frearson.

Musicians, artists, scientists, creators of all kinds often complain that their highest and most challenging work often receives little response and to live they must do much less demanding and creative work to earn their bread and butter.

Human beings often seek escapism including Church world, when reality becomes painful, uncertain, or demanding. Many of us escape by watching evening TV or gaming. Many attend the massively popular conventions around TV shows, films and periods of history.

We all need balance in our lives, yet Christianity invites us not to flee the world, but to pay attention and encounter it honestly and transform it through love. Jesus’ ministry repeatedly turns towards suffering people rather than avoiding them, suggesting that faith is a way of remaining present to reality while imagining its possibilities, requiring humility and openness to uncomfortable truths.
