“Bright and Beautiful” was a celebration of spring in Lawley. Over two days, people of all ages scavenged materials on a nature hunt, created a picture in a clay-filled wooden frame and used it to decorate the well at Lawley Gate.
Decorating wells echoes the tradition of well-dressing that comes from the villages of north Derbyshire. It recognises the importance of water and how our human lives are connected to nature.
Well-dressing reflects the Christian belief that the whole of creation is a beautiful gift and an expression of God’s love. At our event we sang the hymn “All Things Bright and Beautiful.”
Rev Scott, the Team Vicar at St John’s Lawley, led a short service, concluding with a blessing of the picture, the well and the community. We are grateful to Pete and John from the Lawley Gate well group who helped secure the picture in place and shared the history of the well.
“Bright and Beautiful” was jointly organised by the Central Telford Parish and the Telford Methodist Circuit. Lots of hard work was put in by the delivery team which comprised members and friends from three Methodist Churches from across Telford and the ministerial team from the Parish. As you will see from the photographs, much fun and joy were had in sharing in the activities together.
The well-dressing picture will be in place for a few more weeks so you can have fun finding Lawley Gate and seeing it in place.
