Pilgrimage

We are delighted that Spital is now part of the new St. Editha’s Way pilgrim route. It begins at Polesworth Abbey and visits churches and holy sites enroute to Lichfield Cathedral. Spital was of course a wayside chapel offering food, shelter and a place of prayer to pilgrims visiting Lichfield Cathedral and the shrine of St Chad in medieval times. It is wonderful that the route has been re-established and we have received many visitors. We have also found gifts left by pilgrims as was the tradition. A small model of St. James the pilgrim and lately a scallop shell with the cross of St. James, the symbol of pilgrimage to the shrine of St. James at Santiago de Compostela. Both are safely in the window above the altar in Spital. If you have left either of these gifts we’d love to hear from you.
