Apologies for the additional message, but the parish have requested that we bring this forward to 5.15pm before the evening Mass. This is to facilitate refreshments for everyone after the Mass. Whilst it's unusual for Night Prayer to start so early, it's certainly not the earliest time I've ever sung Compline, some notable cases in Leeds Cathedral were even earlier than this!
Come along and either chant or listen to this beautiful Gregorian Chant Office, the traditional Night Prayer of the Church. We've done this a few times before, as some people have told us that it's the perfect way to prepare for the pilgrimage the following day.
This will be Sunday Compline as you've never heard it before! We shall be singing Compline according to the Use of York. It's possible, (admittedly unlikely) that this could have been sung in recusant households during St Margaret's lifetime. We believe that it's certainly the first time that it will have been sung liturgically since the Reformation.
Compline will commence shortly before the Sunday evening Mass, around 5.15pm. There will be a rehearsal earlier in the afternoon at 4pm, which will last for about 45 minutes, giving us some time to prepare for the Office itself. If you wish to join in with the chant, please make every effort to attend this rehearsal! Lifts to Scarthingwell can possibly be arranged, either from west/central York or pick up from Church Fenton Railway Station.
