READY FOR A NEW START AT PARKSTONE GRAMMAR
Herston our Village spent a wonderful hour talking with a very articulate young lady who is excited to be starting at Parkstone Grammar School in September. Skye decided she wanted to go to the school while still in Year 4 at Swanage St Mark's Primary School in Herston. She was inspired by the example of her aunt, Rachael, also a former St Mark’s pupil, who is now a very successful chartered accountant.
“I realised I needed to learn a lot of things if I was going to be a successful woman”, said Skye, “so I decided to try my best to pass the entrance exam”. She had no external coaching, but is aware that Swanage St Mark's Primary School, which she attended since Reception class, gave her a good grounding for the future. “I was a kid with a small brain, who enjoyed playing outside at school”, she said. “Suddenly I started a new class and my little brain grew.” She said the teachers at St Mark’s were, “inspirational at every stage, always understanding, always encouraging if we were struggling”. She particularly remembers “phonic games” in year 2/3; the competitive element spurred her to increase her vocabulary. Skye reserves the highest praise for Mr. Norman, her Year 6 teacher, and particularly remembers some wonderful school field trips. Skye’s mum is equally impressed with St Mark’s because, “the teachers are brilliant and the children are supported and happy”.
Other pupils from St Mark’s have passed the Grammar School entrance exam in previous years but have decided to go to a local secondary school instead. Skye knows that Grammar School will be a challenge – she will need to catch a school bus at 7am every morning! Skye has already made some new friends at the school transition day in Parkstone, but still wants to keep up with the friends she made at St Mark’s. She looks forward to learning new subjects, to improving her English language skills still further, and hopes to get better at football. Her ambition is to be a writer – she loves words – and, possibly, illustrate her own books.
