FORMATION OF THE ORDER
During the 1914-1918 war, the American Order of the Knights of St. Columbus won wide recognition for the welfare work among the troops in France. They were also very active in various parts of the United Kingdom including Glasgow and London. Inspired by the same ideals, Patrick Joseph O’Callaghan, an Irish migrant from Cork gathered a meeting of 24 Catholic men in Glasgow on the 5th October 1919.
Having obtained the permission of the Archbishop, they formed the ‘Order of the Knights of St. Columba’, which they named in honour of Saint Columba, a Christian missionary from Ireland who helped to introduce Christianity to the people in Scotland and Northern Britain. Only a week after its formation, the Order received ecclesiastical approval from Pope Benedict XV.
Who are the Knights?
The Order of the Knights of St. Columba (KSC) is an organised body of Catholic men loyal to the Holy Father in Rome and dedicated to supporting the Bishops and the Clergy in their dioceses and parishes.
Membership of the Order gives men an opportunity to develop themselves more fully as practising Catholics. Living out the fundamental virtues of Charity, Unity and Fraternity, members contribute actively towards the Church’s Moral and Social mission and outreach both nationally and internationally.
The Family Organisation
Worcester Park Council 328 has been in existence since 4 December 1938. In more recent times the Councils of Wimbledon and East Surrey have merged with Council 328.
Dedicated to the Holy Family, the Knights of St. Columba is committed to preserving the sanctity of family life, the protection of human life from conception to natural death and works with like-minded organisations to uphold the moral teachings and values of our faith.
This work is amply displayed by our dedication to supporting St. Raphael’s Hospice in North Cheam, which the Daughters of the Cross established in 1987. Council 328 organised a sponsored walk to help support their work, which was only partially funded by the Government. To date, over 3 decades, our Council has raised over £125k funds for the Hospice and we will continue to do so.
Normally we meet in the Parish hall of St. Christopher’s in Dallas Road, Cheam Village on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. However, during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic we are conducting meetings online via Zoom.
Any Parishioner interested in the KSC is cordially welcomed to join us at one of our meetings as a guest.
