St James the Less Parish Church, Longton, Standing tall on a bluff just out of the middle of the town, St James' Church, Longton, looks every inch the mother church of the area.

Built in 1834, it pre-dates the Victorian age; but recent restoration and re-ordering have made it a magnificent setting for the spiritual life of the Christian community, as well as a welcoming place for community activities. It is in use seven days a week for activities as diverse as slimming groups and the Brownies; for sad occasions like funerals, or glorious celebrations like weddings; for qu

iet prayer, and for the splendour of Benediction. We serve a community of 11,000 people, including some of the very neediest neighbourhoods in the country. We are a congregation who enjoy the Eucharist, welcome strangers, and delight in loving and helping one another and those in need.

The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday - 18th February. The Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes will be celebrated at the Oratory Chapel, Rutland Road, at 11.00 am.

Our LENT COURSE will be held on Tuesday evenings throughout Lent, starting on 24th February at 7.00 pm, at the Oratory Chapel. We will be looking at the portrait of Jesus as presented to us in St Matthew's gospel. The sessions will be informal and undemanding, so come along - no pressure!

Today is Ash Wednesday, and marks the beginning of the Lenten period, in which we prepare for the celebration of Christ's glorious resurrection at Easter through self-reflection and prayer. Christians have been marked in ash - an ancient sign of penitence - with the sign of the cross since the Middle Ages.
