ODE TO THE WILLING HANDS (Part Two)

Coffee is served that grief may speak;
And seats are kind to hearts grown weak,
While garlands bloom on polished wood
like sprouting acts of neighbourhood.
The kettle boils, or children race -
As solace finds a meeting place.

This is a mutual ministry,
Of prayers and praise and empathy;
Of emails sent at half-past ten,
Of “Can you just—?” and “Yes, again.”
Though short on glitz, wishing more came,
We’re simply faithful all the same.

Then, after, in the kitchen there:
High liturgy of dishwash prayer.
The sacrament of soap and steam,
The thorough rinsing by our team;
For mugs, like souls, require release
From stubborn stains to shine in peace.

So praise the lists and bless the locks,
The biscuit tins, the antique clocks;
Bless those who sweep and those who speak,
The strong of voice, the shy, the meek;
Our chapel’s not cold stone or steeple,
But calm retreat for thoughtful people.

And if no angels crowd the stair,
Still something luminous is there:
By stacking cups and mending hems,
In laughter bright like polished gems,
In hands that serve without acclaim -
Love, by another honest name.

Our volunteers - with cloth and screed -
Perform essential rites we need:
To fashion from these ordinary hours
A commonwealth of prayer and flowers,
And show, through effort without fuss,
How hope is served by folk like us.
