Second Helpings - Stamford Saving food. Serving people. Strengthening the community. We're open every Saturday from 12-3 behind Barn Hill Methodist Church.

Second Helpings are dedicated to ensuring that no food is wasted within our local area and that every member of our community has access to both nourishment and dignity. Inspired by Adam Smith's 'Junk Food Cafe' in Leeds, and frustrated at the amount of good food wasted whilst people go hungry, Second Helping Stamford opened in October 2015. We take perfectly edible raw materials from a number of supporters around Stamford and create delicious and wholesome meals. We have a great volunteer network, but we could always do with more! Too early for Christmas? 🎄Never for the volunteers at Second Helpings.

Our Christmas lunch at Barn Hill Methodist Church is a huge deal for us. It's where we open our doors to anyone who might feel cooking Christmas dinner is:

Too expensive

Too overwhelming

A lonely experience

We spend the year squirrelling away ingredients, sourcing gifts, and knocking on the doors of local suppliers who can help make the day go with a swing.

A huge thank you to suppliers like Tesco Stamford, who this week donated non-alcoholic Prosecco and boxes of chocolates so our guests can enjoy a little indulgence and some festive fizz! ✨🥂

It is with a heavy heart that we mark the passing of George Hetherington, the founder of Second Helpings - Stamford, Stamford Methodist Church’s anti-food waste project.

George was passionate about social justice, particularly preventing food waste, feeding people, and building community. He was driven by his Christian values and sustained by a faith that placed service before self.

George continued working in his second food project, George’s Hub, until just a few weeks ago, demonstrating through his own example the commitment, generosity and self-giving spirit that enriched so many lives.

Our heartfelt condolences go to Jan and her family. We are deeply grateful for George’s life, his vision, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind, which we are honoured to continue.

Meet Bill! 👋

Bill works as a support worker at Stamford’s Evergreen Care Trust, visiting residents in need and helping them out with daily tasks. Recently, he came up with a brilliant "field to fork" idea to support his clients.

Bill’s father-in-law, Dr. John Burnett owns a beautiful vegetable garden that produces way more than he can use.

Bill brought the surplus harvest over to Second Helpings, where our talented cooks transformed the fresh veggies into a delicious hearty soup.

By Friday lunchtime, the team at Evergreen was delivering these freshly prepared meals straight to their elderly housebound clients! 🥣✨

It’s a fantastic example of full-circle thinking and just one of the many ways Second Helpings works alongside amazing partners to strengthen our local community. 🫶

A big thanks to everyone who popped by our stall at Sunday's Dog Show on the Meadows.

We're so grateful to all the show goers who picked up some fruit, veg or pastries we'd collected from local suppliers and gave a donation. And it was great to see our homemade dog snacks – made from surplus food of course – also went down a treat.

All the money will go towards helping us save food, serve people and strengthen the community.

Thanks for having us 2nd Stamford Scouts who organised the show – it was a great community event!

🪴Yesterday we got a beautiful donation of tomatoes and peppers from a resident's garden patch.

🍛 Our quick-thinking cooks Richard and Helen have this morning turned into a vibrant red lentil curry. It's nutrient-packed and fresh as they come.

🍽 So get yourself down to Barn Hill Methodist Church from 12-1.30pm today for a hearty and healthy 3-course meal made from local surplus food.

🐾 We’ll be at the Stamford Dog Show this Sunday, cheering on all the local pooches in their finest Sunday best. 🐶

We’ll have fruit and veg we’ll have collected from our suppliers on Saturday. Or simply come and say hi if you’re interested in using our services or joining our Volunteer team. 🥦

We’ll also have a human fruit machine… Intrigued? Come and pay us a visit and you’ll see just what’s involved. 🍉

Along with your favourite food rescue charity, there’ll also be the usual dog show classes, children’s funfair, entertainment and refreshments. 🍦

It opens from 10am-4pm on the Meadows, so best paw forward to see if your pooch can win a prize. See you down there!
