Join us on Sunday 27 September at 3.30pm for our popular Animal Blessing Service.

In previous years we've had dogs, cats, donkeys, snakes, tortoises, degus and even a macaw! What will we see this year?

All welcome

As part of pop in for a rare opportunity to view the Historic Chapter Library of Southwell Minster

📚Saturday, 12th September 2026
from 10.30am – 3.30pm 📖
No need to book - just turn up!

In the late 16C following the Civil War, Southwell Minster began to rebuild a Library. By 1699 some 190 volumes had been collected, the first catalogue is dated 1716 and it is from this that the current exhibition has been created.

Created from books given by local gentry, clergy and bought by Chapter (the governing body of the Minster the Library holds an intriguing variety of subjects. The volumes on display include a copy of the first modern atlas Ortelius Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1575), a first edition of Robt Thoroton Antiquities of Nottinghamshire (1677), Thomas Mace Musick’s Monument (1676) and a seven hundred year old Holy Bible.

Plant of the Week

The grand old horse chestnut in the churchyard is ushering in an autumn air, as its conker shells start to swell. But look more closely inside the canopy of any ageing tree and you’ll find a whole world of life.

Last year we had to decide whether to chop this one down after it had stood watch over the Minster for over a century - or cordon it off to make its collapsing branches safe and let it die slowly and gracefully. This veteran tree will continue to provide food and shelter to a vast population of critters for many more decades to come.

Including the aptly named horse chestnut leaf miner that you can see here, which is food for other insects and spiders, which in turn are a magnet for small birds. Meanwhile, the long grass and deadwood below are hiding fungi, shrews and hedgehogs…

Did you know, break off a horse chestnut leaf and look at the base of the stem… you will see a perfect horseshoe shape complete with seven ‘nails’!

This summer our volunteers at Potwell D**e Grasslands have taken the Minster estate back to its medieval roots!

A band of super scythers have shown what can be achieved with determination, teamwork and partnership with the wider community. 56 bales of hay (and many more bags full) all mown, raked, baled and distributed BY HAND!

Local flocks of sheep, chickens and horses have benefitted from this wildflower-rich luxury hay, in a summer when there was a real shortage of grass for livestock.

Thanks to the Hockerton Housing Project for training our volunteers to use a scythe and make hay while the sun shines! And thanks to the many others who helped cut, process and distribute.

There’s more mowing to do in October, and we’re already planning for next year’s harvest. Anyone can get involved! E-mail [email protected] for info.

Also, some sheep will be on the Nature Reserve for a couple of weeks hoovering up what’s left, so we’ll be closing the permissive path for a short time.

Plant of the Week

Many of the plants in our gardens have long and varied histories way beyond these (currentyl very rainy) shores.

Our colourful dahlias woud have been a healthy root veg for the Aztecs. Agapanthus flowers are worn by the people of the Xhosa and Zulu tribes in southern Africa a protection against thunder (useful over the past few days).

And this plant Amaranthus was a staple grain in Central America as long as 6,000 years ago! It's leaves, stems, seeds and flowers are all edible - a key crop for subsistence around farmers and a close relative of the callaloo of Caribbean cuisine.

You can turn it into popcorn, bread, cakes or porridge! Or just enjoy its stunning deep red threading its way through the late summer border.

Our wonderful Flower Guild have been busy preparing this incredible display for the Southwell Music Festival which starts today! If you look closely, you'll see an opera theme running through them which is a nod to the Night at the Opera performance on Saturday evening.

We thank the Friends of the Southwell Cathedral for their continued generous financial support which enables the team of very talented arrangers to create something special for this very important event in the Minster and town.
