This summer our volunteers at Potwell D**e Grasslands have taken the Minster estate back to its medieval roots!
A band of super scythers have shown what can be achieved with determination, teamwork and partnership with the wider community. 56 bales of hay (and many more bags full) all mown, raked, baled and distributed BY HAND!
Local flocks of sheep, chickens and horses have benefitted from this wildflower-rich luxury hay, in a summer when there was a real shortage of grass for livestock.
Thanks to the Hockerton Housing Project for training our volunteers to use a scythe and make hay while the sun shines! And thanks to the many others who helped cut, process and distribute.
There’s more mowing to do in October, and we’re already planning for next year’s harvest. Anyone can get involved! E-mail [email protected] for info.
Also, some sheep will be on the Nature Reserve for a couple of weeks hoovering up what’s left, so we’ll be closing the permissive path for a short time.
