GOD LOVES THEM THAT LOVE HIM

Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of My Father I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in My name, He may give it you (John 15:15-16).

When God gives us a ministry He tells us what He wants us to do, it is then our responsibility to make sure that we are obedient to that command. We cannot do it out of our own strength, but God gives us an anointing that is more than enough to meet the need. Walking in the Spirit, ordering our life according to God’s leading, gives that anointing the correct place of supremacy in our life. Of course, the anointing is the Holy Spirit. You shall receive power after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you, power to be His witness, His minister, (Acts 1:8) we will be going about our Father’s business, coming to maturity in the place He has ordained us to. We have to totally trust God, it is a perilous road and we have to keep our eyes on Jesus, not looking to the right or the left but following Jesus (Isaiah 30:21), it is exactly as Isaiah describes, listen. And so God speaks to us as He spoke to Moses, as His friend. Friends trust one another and disclose intimate secrets they do not speak to others. I tell you this relationship with Jesus is so wonderful, so close that we marvel at what He tells us. We just know, truth is where we live, but that is also the most perilous place and we must be ever watchful not to be misled, our enemy knows no mercy, but thankfully God knows great mercy. The flesh leads us into false assurance, but the Spirit keeps us closer to God, to stay in the secret place of the Most High, living and walking in the Spirit. We did not choose God or find Him, God was not lost we were, He chose us and knew where to find us, but we must be obedient to Him for His love to be strong in us, to bring us into the fulness of His fruitfulness for which He has ordained us. Perfect love casts out fear, God keeps us in the hollow of His hand, seek Him daily in the Spirit, pray in the Spirit, get immersed in Him, saturated into God. Whatsoever we ask of Almighty God in the name of Jesus He will give it to us. 'I love them that love Me; and those that seek Me early [earnestly or diligently] shall find Me.' (Proverbs 8:17).

I HAVE DECIDED TO FOLLOW JESUS

These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is My commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are My friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you (John 15:11-14).

Jesus was reassuring the disciples that He loved them with such a strong unfailing love that it was the same love that His Father loved Him with and He told them that so that His joy would not desert them when they saw what was about to happen, the very next day in fact. At 3pm the following day Jesus would surrender His spirit to His Father and take the sin of the whole world upon Himself, be made sin for us so that all who confess Christ as Lord and follow Him would be made the righteousness of God in Him. Our surrender may not be to death but our life given in obedience to the calling of Jesus is still a sacrifice God acknowledges (John 12:24-26; Matthew 16:25). We must have no ambition other than to do the will of God and answer His call, 'the call' is the invitation to the banquet, that is what the Greek word means, the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Many are called but few are chosen, make your calling an election sure (2 Peter 1:1-11). Jesus wants us to live in the fullness of His joy (Psalm 16:11). Jesus commands us to love one another, it is not a request, it is a command: Jesus commands us to serve one another in love, in the Spirit and nature of God. This is why it is so important not to know any man after the flesh, but only after the spirit, for then we see the real person, the Christ in our brethren, then we will truly love them, for we do not love the flesh in ourselves but we love God in us. We wrap our arms around ourself and give Him a hug, we love Him in the Spirit in true worship. Moses was God’s friend, but He only remained His friend while he was obedient, Moses disobedience excluded him from entering the promised land. Our friendship with Jesus remains strong, founded in love as long as we are obedient to His will. Obedience is unfailing, loving trust. Romans 8:26-39.

GET IMMERSED IN JESUS

As the Father hath loved Me, so have I loved you: continue ye in My love. If ye keep My commandments, ye shall abide in My love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in His love (John 15:9-10).

God is a spirit: and true worshippers must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth for that is what God has declared acceptable to Him and He is seeking out those who are obedient to His command. Trials are sent to try us, to see how faithful and true we are, what value the work of the Holy Spirit has had in us, how much of God’s likeness is in us. God knows of course, but it is necessary for us to know so we can seek Him more, go deeper into Jesus. Complacency is a cancer in our spirit, the Word of God quickened with the Holy Spirit is powerful and will cut away everything that hinders our relationship with God but we must cooperate and walk in the truth God has birthed within us so that we grow up into Him, come to maturity, and start to fulfil the ministry we have been ordained for in the Body of Christ. It is so wonderful that Jesus loves us with the same love, and the same intensity, that the Father loves Jesus, His beloved Son. Continue to walk in that love. How do we do that? Jesus tells us. If we keep the commands of Jesus, follow Jesus and only Him, we will continually abide in the love of Jesus, the Father’s love. Jesus then goes on to say it is a principle that He has proved: Jesus is rooted and grounded in the love of God because He is obedient to His Father’s command, He follows God and only Him. This is not a slavish observance of rules and regulations, just living in the letter, if we do that we will only worship God with our mouth, but our heart, our spirit, will be far from Him. God wants us to worship Him in our spirit, worship Him with the Holy Spirit who is manifest in us, God is love. And so we have to learn to yield to the Holy Spirit, allow Him to take us over. Pentecost was not a one off experience for the disciples, nor is it for all who follow Christ. When Jesus speaks of baptism in Mark 16 He means a continual immersion in the Spirit. Water baptism in right, but our walk is spiritual and our continuing baptism has to be spiritual, it is a continuing process to rid us of our reliance on the flesh. The more we are immersed in the Spirit the less we cling to our flesh. The Holy Spirit releases us into God, for Him to feed us, to lead us and abide in us. John 6:53-58, not just the emblems of bread and wine, the reality and strength of Christ is in communion with God in the Spirit.

THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM

If a man abide not in Me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned (John 15:6-8).

Jesus is speaking of those that have been grafted into the Vine but the graft has failed, they have not allowed that connection to develop and the flow of the sap to be established, or it has been established and broken because of the trials of this life or a root of bitterness. They have continued to walk in their flesh; their wilfulness or wrong teaching blocking the truth of God, the Word and the Spirit working together to separate us from the corruption of this world. If you think that the salvation prayer is a permit to continue in sin, you are trampling on the blood of Christ and you are going to hear those fearful words of Jesus recorded in Matthew 7:21-23. Jesus came to set us free from sin, free indeed, free in reality and He does that through His Word and the flow of the Holy Spirit into our life, cutting us free from our soulish nature and bringing us into the glorious liberty of the children of God, not to be free to sin but free from sin, to choose righteousness, choose Jesus. We saw in John 8 Jesus is the light of the world and those who follow Him do not walk in darkness, that means sin, but walk in the light as He is in the light to be cleansed from all sin, it is not notional it is the reality (1 John 1:5-7), because grace and truth came through Jesus Christ and He will lead us in truth and righteousness through the Holy Spirit. If satan could not stand in the holy presence of Almighty God because of his sin in deceiving and robbing Adam of his inheritance (Luke 10:18), and Adam and Eve were expelled too, then neither will we stand in God’s holy presence if we profane His word. We have to keep His commands to remain in His love. We see this principle applied in Israel taken into slavery, even to Moses, God’s friend, denied access to the promised land. Warnings are given to the Churches in Ephesus and Laodicea. See, we can only be a light on the candlestick if we are filled with the light of Christ, the oil of the Holy Spirit and the fire of God abiding in us; Jesus can only spew us out if we are already in the Body of Christ. These words might bring uncertainty, fear or even anger to you, but know this there is a theme that runs throughout the scripture, Old and New Covenant, and that theme is voiced in those words engraved in the signet on the front of the High Priest’s bonnet: 'HOLINESS TO THE LORD’ (Exodus 28:36). Those words are engraved in the heart of every born again believer who has not been deceived into an easy powerless gospel that robs them of their inheritance in God and leaves them in sin, which is still the sting of death. Repent, come before the Lord to be washed clean and walk in His love and power (Zechariah 3). The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding (Proverbs 9:10). Jude 19-21.

WITHOUT JESUS WE CAN DO NOTHING

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing (John 15:4-5).

There is sequence here, seek Christ first, then the fruit flows. God told me to look for the sequences in the scripture and follow them to receive the promised blessing. All of God’s promises are based on 'if you do this, I [God] will do that'. We cannot expect the blessing if we omit or refuse to fulfil the conditions to receive it. We have to keep God's commands. Abide is the Greek word ‘menō’, it is another of those pluperfect verbs, so it is a continual, continuation of continuity in abiding, a settled union in the peace of God. Paul describes it in Ephesians 3 as being rooted and grounded in love, being immovable, permanent, as an established graft in the Vine. In Ephesians 4 Paul tells us the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Church is to establish in us the full measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. So we are grafted into the Vine and the sap of the Holy Spirit is bringing us to maturity so that fruit can be formed. The fruit is nourishment for others, for them to be nurtured and come to maturity and within the fruit is the seed for more growth. We can do nothing without Jesus, without having this deep assurance of the faith of the Son of God and the Holy Spirit’s comfort and counsel to direct us. If we work out of our own strength doing what we think is a good thing to do it is of our own will and will be for our glory. If we work in the will of God directed and equipped in the will of God we will work in the Spirit and the abundance of life will flow for God’s glory. If our vision is to build something on this earth, a reputation or a legacy, we need to search our heart, it will achieve nothing in the Spirit. If our vision is for God’s kingdom and we are waiting upon God for direction then we need to keep following the leading of the Holy Spirit to maintain the blessing. When God put me in the ministry He has given me, He told me precisely what to do, irrespective of what people say or do. We please God not men. Part of my ‘job’ is to tell people what they do not want to hear, the word of God challenges, it is a sword, we must wield it with love but wield it we must or we preach another gospel, a gospel with no power! Love is not always a cuddle, it is sometimes a correction, a cutting away of our selfish nature so that the Fruit of the Spirit may come in all His fulness. God loves us and He will not sit still and see us perish, but we must love the Lord our God with all our heart, and with all our soul and with all our mind and with all our strength. To demonstrate that deep loving trust we must obey His commands.

I’M DRAWING FROM THE VINE

I am the true vine, and My Father is the husbandman. Every branch in Me that beareth not fruit He taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, He purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you (John 15:1-3).

Wine was the daily drink of everyone, water purity was unreliable. It was not strong wine, more like grape juice. Jesus is the real Vine, what He describes is not just an illustration but the reality of our living, our experience, in the Spirit. The Vine is nurtured and brought to maturity through the daily care of the gardener, our Father, everything He does is to maintain the health of the Vine and to make it bear an abundance of fruit. The fruit that comes from the Vine is to glorify Him, bring our Father great satisfaction and honour. He loves the Vine and the branches. When we are saved, born again, we give our heart to Jesus, become betrothed to Him. We are not grafted into an imaginary vine, we are grafted into Jesus, to be joined to Him, become one with Him. This union comes as the branch draws sap from the vine. The Vine is wounded to receive the branch, the branch is cut off from where it was and the Father brings the two together, who binds them together with love. The Spirit is the sap of the Vine, which flows from the nurturing hand of the Father. The branch has to fully surrender itself, its nature, to the sap of the Vine to receive the life giving flow and to take on the nature of the Vine until they become one. The action of this union is to produce fruit. If the branch will not bear fruit it is pruned out, taken away, for fruit is the purpose of the Vine. If the branch is fruit bearing it is pruned to produce more fruit bearing spurs and therefore an abundance of fruit. That pruning seems negative at the time but without it the branch would become spindly and weak, fruit would not form properly, no abundance. Jesus reassures His disciples that they have been pruned with the word He has spoken to them (Romans 10:17; Hebrews 4:12-13) so they are prepared to bear fruit, 'for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth’ (Ephesians 5:9) and Paul warns us to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, sin, the life we have been cut free from, but to walk in the newness of life, the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, drawing from the Vine (2 Corinthians 5:16-19; Ephesians 4:2-24), so we must walk in the light if we are to bear fruit and avoid being pruned out (1 John 1:5-7).

THANK YOU GOD FOR SENDING JESUS

Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in Me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave Me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence (John 14:30-31).

The last supper is finished, Judas has received his instructions and satan with them; Jesus has betrothed Himself to His disciples, as He told them of His departure and promised to return as surely as a bridegroom returns for his bride. He has told them that they must obey His word to receive the benefits of His promises, as testimony of their betrothal and love for Him. This is the covenant of betrothal between God and His Church, their faithfulness to one another. They arise from their meal and Jesus leads them out toward a favourite place for them, Gethsemane. As they leave Jesus tells the disciples that satan, the prince of this world, is about to be manifest, to do what is needed to be done for satan’s defeat: to take away his assumed authority stolen from Adam, to restore all of creation back to God, to set the captives free, and take the keys of death and hell from satan’s grasp. Jesus declared satan prince of this world but he had no place in Jesus, no authority over Him, nothing in Jesus to eclipse God, no shadow of turning in Him. And then Jesus announces the final unfolding of His ministry, the very reason He was made manifest on the earth as our Immanuel, our Redeemer, our Saviour. All heaven rejoiced at His birth, heaven and earth will rejoice in the glorious liberty flowing out of Christ's death and resurrection. But notice, He takes no glory for Himself, He prepares to lay down His life in obedience to our Father’s command, obedient because of His love for His Father. He does it for the glory of His Father, our Father. John 14:23.

BEHOLD! - THE RISEN CHRIST

Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved Me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for My Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe (John 14:28-29).

Jesus is speaking here of His death and resurrection, they would see Him die an horrendous death to wash us clean in His own blood, defeating sin, and God His Father would raise Him up from death through the Holy Spirit in the victory of the resurrection. See, what seems like defeat to the eye of the natural man is victory in the Spirit. For we have been raised out of the defeat of sin and death into the victory of the cross and the resurrection. And so Jesus is going back to the Father, although it will mean the death of Jesus’ mortal body, it is a time of rejoicing for He will be clothed in His glorious body, in the presence of His Father, returning to His rightful, spiritual inheritance and so it is with everyone born again believer, who lives and walks in the Spirit. Jesus always gives praise to His Father and uplifts His holy name. ‘My Father is great than I’, it can mean ‘older’, the Father did come before the Son, but in this sense it is a commitment to service, Jesus came to do the will of the Father, it is His whole ministry. Jesus is not suggesting a ranking but a place of willing surrender to His Father’s will to accomplish all that is required to redeem and restore creation back to God. He is restoring His Father’s kingdom back to where God intended it to be and we have also been given that same ministry of reconciliation. The Holy Spirit, the Spirit that proceeds from the Father, has also surrendered Himself to that same position of service, fulfilling a different part to that of Jesus our Saviour Redeemer, in revealing all that Jesus is: the Word of God. The Way: the access point and the walk of holiness before the Lord; the Truth, that defeats the corruption of satan’s deception, the word of antichrist; the Life that has defeated death and the sting of death which is sin. Jesus then declares why He is telling them what He has told them so far and what is about to follow: that their faith would not fail them. There is much that God tells us through prophesy but in these last days He has spoken to us through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ, and He is still speaking. It is the Word of God and the Holy Spirit working together that formed all of creation, according to our Father’s will, it is the Word of God and the Holy Spirit working together that is restoring, reconciling, all of creation back to God and then the New Heaven and the New Earth. Even for us He has made all things new, for we are not the same, we are changed from glory to glory into the image of Christ. As the veil of unbelief is stripped from us we behold the Risen Christ in all His glory through the revelation of the Holy Spirit of the Lord (2 Corinthians 17-18). Even so come quickly Lord Jesus.

PEACE, PEACE WONDERFUL PEACE

These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:25-27).

This is God’s multiplication. What Jesus is saying is that His disciples, heard and saw all He did during His ministry with them at His side. The gospels, tell us some of what Jesus said and did. But there is more to see and do! The Holy Spirit was sent to teach us all things and then bring to our remembrance all we have seen and heard as the Lord needs us to remember it. See, the Holy Spirit will teach us all things, not just a glimpse but all things, as we surrender our attention and our time to pray and wait upon God with our spiritual ears open and our Bible in our hand. Teaching is not confirming our pet dogma, teaching is discovering more of God, letting the Holy Spirit take us into deeper depths of God, to know Him more. It is the extent of Truth abiding within us that is the measure of our faith, we must go deeper in God, ask God to completely immerse us in His Spirit until we become so saturated in Jesus that we are like Him. Out of our spirit will flow the mighty Holy Spirit like rivers of living water. Peace is being still and knowing that God is God. Jesus met the Gadarene man with the legion of demons, who ran to Jesus and declared Him, 'Jesus, Son of the Most High God', the demons knew who Jesus is. Jesus stood in the peace of His authority and commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. It was already settled the demons would have to leave, torment cannot stand in the peace of God. The peace of God stands in our absolute loving trust, our full surrender to God, we can only have the peace of God when we know we have peace with God, the extent of Christ's atonement for us, the breadth and length and depth and height of Christ's love for us. We only get into the depth of His love as we get immersed in Him. When I first read Ephesians 3:18 I saw myself suspended, just floating, weightless, no burdens, in God’s love, nothing else in sight, no fear, just love and peace, settled in God. God has got no favourites, all we need to do is surrender to Him. 1 John 4:18.
