THE BELIEVER’S AUTHORITY AND POWER

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:1-4)

The Jewish day starts at 6am so it happened after then but before 9am as we will discover later. It was the Feast of Pentecost, the thanksgiving for the harvest celebrated 50 days after Passover, the release from the curse of sin and death, the giving of new life in the resurrection of Christ. For the born again Church Pentecost is the giving of authority and power to the Church that we may minister in power and have the authority and power to walk in the will of God, to overcome that liar satan in all his deceptive disguises and to continue Jesus’ ministry in reconciling man to God, and more. They had spent 10 days together waiting for this promise of the Father, they started waiting in one accord and remained in one accord to receive their crowning glory as sons of God: princes, royal priests in the kingdom of the Risen Christ Jesus. They were sat in prayer, then the whole house was filled with the sound of a tempest, rushing means to speedily carry forward as an announcement, it was the sound of the mighty breath of God. Then appeared to them a pair of tongues of fire, living flames, that settled on each of them. At Jesus' baptism a dove of peace settled upon Him and remained with Him, the Prince of Peace. The fire of the Holy Spirit alighted on each of the 120 and then they were all filled to all their fulness with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in their spiritual language as the Holy Spirit fully possessed them, overwhelmed them and overflowed them, the Holy Spirit speaking out of them in a jubilant outburst glorifying and giving thanks to God for their harvest of the gifts and fruit of the Spirit. Thank you Father, Son and Holy Spirit!!

PLEASE PRAY for Fiskerton meetings, that God’s presence for salvation, healing and deliverance will so fill the house that only God can minister. All power is given to the wonderful name of Jesus. BE SEPARATED TO GOD

And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two Thou hast chosen, That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas through transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles (Acts 1:24-26).

Before Jesus appointed the disciples He prayed, spent all night in prayer, to make sure He was following the will of the Father. God had shown Nathanael to Jesus in a vision. Andrew had taken Simon Peter to Jesus and He knew where to find the others. We see another instance when the Holy Spirit gave Cornelius Peter’s name and address so that he could send for Peter and they all were baptised in the Holy Spirit as the 120. God knows where we live. The Apostles had been in the upper room praying for some days and Peter, obeying the Holy Spirit’s prompting, stood to fulfil the prophecy concerning Judas’ replacement. They did not pick out Matthias, the Holy Spirit did it. Each Apostle in turn placed two different coloured stones or pieces of wood marked with the names and put them in a pot, shook and threw out the pieces, whichever fell out first was the person chosen, therefore the choice was wholly God’s, no risk of human favour. Matthias was God’s chosen replacement and took his place with the other Apostles in the foundation of the Church. Matthias had his own place in their number, a place to which God had appointed him, as our Father has chosen and appointed each born again believer whom He saw in Jesus before the foundation of the world and ordained them to their place in the Body of Christ (Ephesians 1:4). Each one of us makes up the number to complete the Body of Jesus sat with Him in the Father’s throne. A workman is fully useful when his skill is fully developed, but even the apprentice has some skill, and it is on this basis of development that Paul refers to the Body of Christ (Ephesians 4:11-16). There is some growing up to do (v15), to learn in the things we suffer through correction, hear the word of instruction and move, to get joined to Christ our Head, as we present our body a living sacrifice, made holy and acceptable to God through the blood of Jesus for His service (Romans 12:1-2).

ARISE, SHINE, THE LIGHT HAS COME

Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that He was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of His resurrection. And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias (Acts 1:21-23).

We know from the gospels that some of John the Baptist’s disciples joined with Jesus; Andrew and John followed Him home to get to know Him, He whom John the Baptist had declared the Lamb of God, who has taken away the sin of the world. John gave place to Jesus, whom Jesus declared the greatest of the prophets. Peter refers to Psalm 109:8 which prophesies of Judas’ downfall and the appointment of another in his place. Judas had to be replaced for the prophecies concerning the position of the twelve apostles of the Lamb to properly be fulfilled. Judas could never be considered to be part of the foundation of Christ’s kingdom, therefore there had to be another. The word translated bishoprick (v20) also refers to an investigation of men’s hearts to assess their suitability for good or bad. This echoing of meanings establishes the true meaning of what is being said and we often see it in the scripture. Some berate teachers for repetition but it is the means used to embed truth in a person’s spirit. Man’s attention span is short but we have to commit our life to Jesus and stand in the truth that He delivers into our spirit against the vilest attacks of the enemy: when Truth is embedded in our spirit the tempter’s power is broken. We must not be fearful but watchful not to give the devil place, the Holy Spirit will guide and counsel us: prayer will make us sensitive to His words and proving God through works of the Spirit will make us steadfast in our obedience. Love never fails. Notice that Peter calls Joseph and Matthias to be witnesses of Christ’s resurrection, the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus is all about the resurrection having been washed clean in the blood of Jesus. Many sit bemoaning sin when deliverance is in the resurrection, the Risen Christ who has taken away the sin of the world for all those that follow Jesus (Romans 8). Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee (Isaiah 60:1). Walk with the Risen Christ, our Beloved, in the paths of righteousness. 1 John 3:1-3.

I AM CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST . . .

Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take (Acts 1:18-20).

All that Judas did is prophesied in Psalms and in Zechariah, to this day his name is spoken and written as a witness to betrayal. Judas is one who asked the Lord if it was him who would betray Jesus and Jesus flatly told him that it was him, Judas. He discovered his folly too late, after his deed had been done, and went and hanged himself. The chief priests who also betrayed the King of Glory recognised their sin and bought the Potter’s field with their blood money as a burial place for strangers, Gentiles. The prophesies declare the end of Judas and his inheritance in the kingdom. Zechariah speaks of the end of the false shepherds who preach error and false witness of the holiness of God. We must walk in the light of God’s word, spoken through the Holy Spirit and confirmed in scripture, for it is a lamp unto our feet and light unto our path Psalm 119:5-6; Proverbs 6:23. See that adultery is not only the marriage vow broken, but the marriage vow we made to God on the day of our salvation when we gave our heart to Jesus, our whole being surrendered to God’s Beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, our Beloved bridegroom, for us then to put others before Jesus, before our Father and refuse the leading of the Holy Spirit, seeking our own truth to deny the way of the cross. Galatians 2:20.

WATCH AND PRAY TO AVOID TEMPTATION

And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost in the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry (Acts 1:15-17).

Over 500 people in one group saw Jesus after His resurrection and there were more beside them (1 Corinthians 15:6) but only 120 gathered in that upper room to watch and pray for the promise of the Father, the mighty Holy Spirit. Even in these momentous days when prophecy is fulfilled almost daily as we minister in the power of God’s love and anointing and we look intently, expectantly, for the Son of Man to take us home, there are those who have heard the truth and lay aside sleeping and distracted with the world. And yet this is still the time of preparation, for war, for tribulation and then revival to take us home. Some say they are waiting in God’s rocking chair, but He is sat in His throne, the place of authority and power, the place where the Lord Jesus Christ sits and we too, for we are the Body of Christ. It is time to grow up into Him and get connected with the Head. To present our body a living sacrifice to Jesus so that He can transfigure us into His likeness and come into maturity in Christ. See, the man who betrayed Jesus had part of the ministry, He stood with the Lord Jesus Christ who sent him out with his brethren in twos to minister the gospel in His authority and then again as part of the 70. Judas' vision was an earthly kingdom, earthly power, satan gained a foothold in his ambition. Adam lived in God’s presence in God’s Eden but he followed his beloved, not God: she led him to deception and he fell. At Gethsemane Jesus asked His closest disciples to separate themselves with Him, to watch and pray with Him as He prayed the Father, to submit Himself to the cross for our victory. They fell asleep. Matthew 26:36-46. How much we need to watch and pray in these days, be vigilant and watchful, praying in the Spirit to keep ourselves in the love of God, building ourselves up in the faith, that we be prepared and fully armed for we are not sat cosy before a fire but on a battlefield with an adversary who is looking for those whom he can devour. Ephesians 6:10-18.

THE LORD GOD OMNIPOTENT REIGNS

And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren (Acts 1:13-14).

When they got to Jerusalem they went into an upper room and all eleven disciples along with the women who regularly followed Jesus and looked after Him, and Mary the mother of Jesus and Jesus’ brothers, stayed there in prayer, and earnest seeking for the promise of the Father, the mighty Holy Spirit. Jesus’ brothers scorned and ridiculed Him during His ministry. Accusing Him of wanting to make a name for Himself, He already had a name written in heaven: Messiah and Emmanuel, the Son of God. They went to see Him but could not get near Him for the great crowds. They went not to see God’s wonderful works but to take Him back to their home and stop His ‘madness’. But Jesus rejected them, He knew what His Father’s business is and even His own family would not distract Him from it. I thank God that many do the same today. We are not hireling shepherds who run away when opposition, trial and tribulation come but true born sons of God, whose Father owns the sheep and draws them to Him. Notice this profound fact, clearly stated, they continued in the upper room with one accord, one singleness of mind, they saw the promise and they were intent on receiving it. The Greek word means ’to rush along in unison’, determined and not prepared to stop until they received the promise. It remembers Jacob’s cry of: ‘I will not let You go until You bless me’, God changed His walk and His name. He has changed our name too, no longer sinners but overcomers, princes in the kingdom, separated to God, ministering in the love and power of God’s anointing with all the authority that Jesus won for us through His death and resurrection. What more do we need than to walk in the Spirit, Jesus leading us in the presence of Almighty God. Revelation 19:6-8.

PERFECT LOVE CASTS OUT FEAR

And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood next to them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey (Acts 1:9-12).

Can you imagine how their attention would be totally focused on Jesus as He ascended and was received into the cloud of the Spirit? We see visions and we are totally entranced, as John was when Jesus came to Him in the Spirit and used him as His scribe to write to the Seven Churches in Asia and then the visions that followed. God often speaks to me in pictures, I see it and describe what I see. I also see visions. He speaks to me too and His words are so deep. I had an experience with Him some years ago when He sent two men to talk to me, He was still revealing truth out of what He said years later. As we surrender more and go deeper in the Spirit the revelation of Jesus in us becomes deeper and we know Him more and more, we go from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:17-18). This is the Holy Spirit taking us into all truth. We cannot understand through our intellect but we can comprehend in our spirit. It is the love of God, His passion for us, that is what we really need to come into (Ephesians 3:14-21), through His love He dispels all fear, all doubt, the debate has ended, peace reigns. John 17:3; 1 John 4:18. God’s love is not fickle as is man’s love, God is eternal - God is love. What the two men told the disciples is prophecy of Christ’s second coming, not the rapture when we meet Him in the clouds, but His return to rule the earth for 1000 years when His feet touch down on the Mount of Olives as prophesied in Zechariah 14. And so our focus has to be Jesus, when we look into His wonderful face everything else comes into clear view, in its right perspective, deception gives way to God’s reality.

THE RESURRECTION LIFE OF CHRIST

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:8).

There is more to say on Acts 1:8. Jesus plainly states it: ‘Ye shall receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you’. The Lord told me to look at the opposite of these phrases, so, if the Holy Spirit is not manifest in us with the evidence of speaking in tongues, then we have no power. There are some who debate whether the Holy Spirit is necessary. Is the Lord Jesus Christ optional? Jesus prayed the Father to release the Holy Spirit and Jesus sent Him from the Father, a love gift to the Church. Jesus had to leave for the Holy Spirit to be manifest upon the earth, to bear witness of Jesus and bring us into all truth (John 16:7). Jesus sent us another Comforter. See who the Holy Spirit is: the Holy Spirit proceedeth from the Father, He is the Spirit of the Father, do we seriously think we do not need our Father, that His Spirit is an ‘optional extra’, Knowing the Holy Spirit proceeds directly from the Father is such a blessing, and even more so when we understand what the Greek word translated ‘proceedeth' means: ‘He flows from the mouth of God like a river’. I will never get tired of saying it because there stands all three of the Godhead. The Father; the Mouth of God who is Jesus for He is the Word; and the Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead, who dwells in us and flows like a river of living water out of our spirit, the cleansing, healing stream of salvation, healing and deliverance (John 7:38-39). He is the resurrection Spirit of Jesus. Jesus redeemed us with His own blood, washed us clean, so that the Holy Spirit, Christ’s resurrection life, could also raise us from the dead in newness of life. The veil has been taken away, the Holy Spirit reveals Christ in us and brings us into the glorious liberty of the children of God, it is the anointing that breaks the yoke. All three Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all still working to bring us to the fulness of the stature of a man in Christ Jesus. Stop arguing, prideful boasting, we only have what we have received, our intellect did not earn it our spirit received it. Earnestly seek to love one another as Jesus loves us, standing in the unity of the Spirit, in union with God our Father through our Lord Jesus Christ and the mighty Holy Spirit.

THERE IS VICTORY IN JESUS

When they therefore were come together, they asked of Him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And He said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:6-8).

The disciples still believed that Jesus would set them free from Roman tyranny and Israel would be free from oppressing armies, becoming once more God’s great nation. But Jesus’ battle was already won, and because of His victory the establishment of Christ’s throne will happen with the millennium, when Christ will rule the earth from Jerusalem for 1000 years and we, the redeemed, the overcomers, whose robes have been washed white in the blood of the Lamb will reign with Him (Revelation 7). We can see the signs of world events, note the sequence of events given to us in what Jesus told the disciples (Matthew 24), and told us in the Book of the Seven Seals (Revelation 6). We feel the rising temperature in the Spirit, but we do not know for sure when all of these things will be fulfilled, but God has spoken the word so they will happen. The baptism in the Holy Spirit gives us power, the same power and authority that Jesus had to be a witness of God’s glory, as Jesus glorified the Father. When we pray we pray to the Father in the name of Jesus, we speak to the mountain in that wonderful name of Jesus and it is lifted up and flung into the sea. Faith is the substance of our expectations, we expect miracles and miracles happen. We do not pray to see if God might answer, the answer is already there, Jesus disarmed satan and stripped him of all power, the gift is given all we have to do is receive it. God cannot be measured in the failure of our lack of faith. Faith is the only virtue that is both a gift and fruit of the Spirit, it is that important, that fundamental to our walk in the victory of Christ. ‘Without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him' (Hebrews 11:6). Don’t look at what you did in hope. Look at what God has already done through Jesus to give you the victory.

THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH

And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith He, ye have heard of Me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence (Acts 1:4-5).

John did baptise with water, he also gave witness to what God had told him: 'that upon Him whom you will see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, He will baptise with the Holy Spirit’. Prophets of old did not have the Holy Spirit abiding on them, they only received anointing at the time God ministered through them. Jesus is not just a prophet, He is the Son of God filled with all the fullness of God, one with Him, in union with Him, so much so that when we see Jesus in the Spirit, we look into the face of our Father. He is the Risen Christ, satan is utterly defeated, that is why we will do greater things than even Jesus did. It is time to take hold of faith and walk in the promise. God is not withholding any thing from us. What things soever - any things - you desire when you pray believe that you receive them and you shall have them (Mark 11:22-26). Faith is spiritual muscle, the more you use it the stronger it grows (Philippians 4:13). Jesus spoke in depth with them about the Holy Spirit and the need for Him to go back to His Father so the Holy Spirit could be released: John 14-17. The basis for receiving this promise was that they should love one another as He had loved them: sacrificial love, we will speak more of this presently. Some years ago when the Lord started talking to me about the soon coming revival He told me that the hallmark would be the unity of the saints, that binding together with love that makes the many strands of the Church as strong as the hawser that holds a ship to it’s anchor. 'I have an anchor that keeps my soul, steadfast and sure while the billows roll, fastened to the Rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love.’ See, it is all love, all God for He is love. And so the promise is given, Jesus the Word has spoken it, they will be fully immersed in the Holy Spirit in just a few days time. The disciples knew His word would come to pass as sure as night follows day. I pray that all the saints today will put off their little faith and step out boldly in the faith of the Son of God.
