SASWT Schools & Sports Projects

SASWT Schools & Sports Projects Christian organisation raising funds for local youth & sports leaders to serve the schools in Southport both in personnel and multimedia resource.

We are a Scripture Union Local Mission Partner working in partnership with the Pais Movement, and set up in 1999 by churches and Christians in Southport and Formby, who wanted to serve their local schools. For two decades, the majority of schools across Southport, Formby and surrounding areas have benefitted through assemblies, lessons, presentations and extra-curricular clubs and activities. Thes

e have been delivered by our employed schools worker, a team of local church volunteers, a Pais Project team of gap year apprentices, and most recently a part time sports ministry leader. Our aim is to see this work continue, grow and develop through working in partnership with local schools and local churches, in order to see that great impact across Southport in the years to come, which is very much in our hearts and prayers.

Impact Youth is a community youth project we help to facilitate in the Ainsdale area, which aims to take the ethos and success of our secondary school Safe Spaces and shine this same light into the local community through a wonderful church partnership.
Currently meeting in the cafe/lounge and sports hall at Ainsdale Methodist Church, we transform the space once a week into a youth venue with big screens, games consoles, lights, music, chill-out space and a variety of sports.
Around half way through the evening, we provide a small meal and cake, followed by “Cake Space” – a chance where we gather all the young people together to chat over cake and drinks, build community in a fun way and discuss our ‘Rooted’ question of the week from Scripture Union.

One of last week's highlights from Tabz: "It was great to start our It's Your Move visits to Year 6s ahead of their transition to secondary school. When we work with so many children across different primary schools, it's a really special time finding out which secondary schools they are planning to move to and seeing their delight when they find out they will see our team there every week through Safe Space. It is an honour to continue that journey with so many students. On the same day, I reflected with some Year 11s sitting their GCSEs on how they'd known me right through all their years of primary and secondary school - it's conversations like that where you track the impact our work has on individuals and pray for them as they continue on their journey."

Our lunchtime ‘Safe Spaces’ are key to our work in secondary schools, as we pop-up our gazebo setup out on the school yard, most lunchtimes speaking to over 100 students in each of the five main Southport schools who come to check in with us weekly. As Christian workers and volunteers, we aim to create a safe space for those students to explore the big issues of life and faith. We provide an opportunity for them to rate their mental health and wellbeing with our traffic light system (data which the school leadership then use to shape their pastoral care), to explore the roots of how they are feeling, and explore positive practices. We find as we embark on this journey with so many young people across our five main secondary schools, it has become a great platform for building trusted relationships, where deeper issues of life and faith are regularly discussed very naturally.

It’s Your Move’ is an interactive, fun-packed introduction to the world of secondary school based on a resource from Scripture Union. Because we work as youth workers in secondary schools across Southport, we see it as a top priority to offer this presentation to year 6s every year to help them with their move.
We dispel some of the common worries around secondary school transition with many years of wisdom. Due to our uniquely consistent role across both stages of their school life, we reassure them with our promise to help them through the whole process, heavily promoting our secondary school Safe Spaces to explore the big issues of life and faith.

One of last week's highlights from Tabz: "It was a privilege to speak at a gathering of local youth leaders on Wednesday evening. Over the years, I've seen a few different seasons of church youth leaders working together for the sake of the young people in Southport and beyond, and it is once again really encouraging to see us embarking on another one of these seasons. 'Unified' Youth Leader gatherings are a set to be a pattern of monthly worship and prayer passionately headed up by Connor from Lakeside Church. It is powerful to join together, to support one another and seek the help of the Holy Spirit. Excited to see where God takes us and how we can give young people similar opportunities to worship and encounter Jesus. "

Every year we produce a fresh 45-minute production from scratch for the primary schools of Southport and beyond. Our staff and volunteers tour from school to school throughout December taking the show on the road and performing up to 20 times to both Key Stage 1 and 2. From Frozen, to The Greatest Snowman, to superheroes, to the Lion King, to whatever other themes we’ve been able to dream up, our productions have been touring Southport & beyond since 1999!
An incredible amount of preparation work goes into each year’s show, especially given the high level of multimedia production. The last three years of productions were also adapted for full length video, professionally edited and uploaded online for everyone to watch. We are always thrilled to hear the great feedback from families who have watched it together at home. Here they are free for your viewing pleasure:

One of last week's highlights from Amelia: "Last week we were talking with young people about the question, 'How would you support a friend struggling with poor mental health?' My highlight was seeing so many young people really embrace the advice/support that they came up with for when you are having a tough day. We had them write their advice on postcards so that it can be shared with those who need it. Several of them had said how they hope it supports friends or people they don’t know when struggling."

One of last week's highlights from Simon: "It has been great doing our Walk Through the Bible sessions with year 5 students recently. Last week some of the kids who had come to our after school club last year came up and were talking about how much they enjoyed the club and also how much they enjoy the Walk Through the Bible sessions since they are fun and teach about God. This was great to hear from them as they were able to remember things from the after school club from last year and tell others about it. They then said that part of the Old Testament that we were looking at in the session connects to Jesus and the fruit of the Spirit. "

Mission Impossible is our most loved & longest running production, although many of the Year 4-6 pupils who visit would describe it as more of an ‘experience’! In the last three weeks of term, leading up to Easter, we annually transform Scarisbrick New Road Baptist Church into a mock secret agent headquarters.

One of last week's highlights from Tabz: "It was a real honour to speak at the retirement service of a Headteacher I've worked with across two of the schools she invested so much of herself into. Very sorry to see her go, but thankful to have been given great opportunities by her and to be inspired by her wonderful heart for children of every background, culture and ability level. Her laughter and smile is something her school told her they will always remember her for, which perfectly sums up something we agreed on together many years ago - that "the joy of the Lord is our strength"."
