Last night, on the eve of the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, the Koro Filipino of Southampton led an evening of prayer — beginning with the recitation of the Holy Rosary after Mass, and culminating in the veneration of a relic piece from the mantle of the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Rosary of La Naval de Manila. In the long history of the image’s miracles, its sacred vestments have been known to bring about wondrous favours through Our Lady’s intercession. We are therefore deeply blessed in our parish to have received this fragment of her mantle, a tangible link to the devotion that has inspired countless graces in Manila for centuries. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the National Shrine of La Naval de Manila for generously providing this precious relic.

In this month of the Holy Rosary, we invite everyone to visit the Lady Chapel, spend a quiet moment in prayer or in the recitation of the Holy Rosary, and venerate the relic piece of Our Lady’s mantle. You may approach the altar, offer your prayers before it, or kiss the relic in reverence. The relic will remain in the Lady Chapel throughout the month of October for those who wish to come and pray. Entrust your intentions to her maternal care, and may the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary draw all hearts closer to her Son, gathering us together beneath her mantle of faith.

We are happy to share that the Rosary Petition Book has now arrived—albeit a few days after the start of the Rosary month! This book forms part of the Rosarian devotion recently introduced here in Southampton, generously approved by Canon Michael and with the consent of the Father Prior of the Santo Domingo Convent. Parishioners are warmly invited to drop by the Lady Chapel and write their personal petitions to Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary. Each entry will be treated with reverence and confidentiality, ensuring that all intentions—whether signed or anonymous—are handled prayerfully and respectfully. A short guide has also been included inside the book to help you write your petition with faith and sincerity.

Once the book is filled, it will be sent to the Shrine in the Philippines, where the Dominican community will pray for all the intentions lovingly written by the people of Southampton. A La Naval de Manila Novena Booklet has also been left beside it, containing prayers for the sick, seafarers, expectant mothers, and other special intentions.

May this devotion bring us closer together in prayer beneath the maternal mantle of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary.

Through the generosity of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Santo Domingo, Quezon City, Philippines, St Edmund’s Church has received a relic fragment taken from the old manto (mantle) of the venerated image of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of La Naval de Manila. This sacred vestment, now entrusted to our parish as a perpetual gift, has been reverently enthroned on the side altar of Our Lady’s Chapel.

In the long history of devotion to Our Lady of La Naval, many miracles have been attributed through the agency of her holy vestments, for they are garments that clothed the miraculous image itself. For us at St Edmund’s, this relic is a providential grace in the Month of the Holy Rosary, a visible reminder of Our Lady’s maternal care and powerful intercession.

Canon Michael has gratefully received this gift on behalf of the parish, and it is now enthroned in the Lady’s Chapel. Parishioners are warmly encouraged to spend time in prayer there and to venerate the relic throughout this holy month, especially on Tuesday, 7 October, after the 10am Mass on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Let us welcome this grace with faith and devotion, and entrust ourselves anew to the Virgin of the Beads.

We now stand at the threshold of the Month of the Rosary, and the Lady’s Chapel is now prepared for this season of devotion. Enthroned there is a small replica of Our Lady of the Rosary of La Naval de Manila—a cherished title of the Blessed Virgin, closely tied to the maritime history of the Philippines, and deeply resonant with us here in Southampton, a city shaped by the sea. Though the statue is a replica, attached to its base is something most precious: a fragment of the vestment worn by the miraculous image of Our Lady, accompanied by its official authentication. The history of this revered Marian image tells of countless healings and extraordinary favours obtained through her intercession, through the agency of her sacred vestments.

As October approaches, we warmly invite you to visit the Lady’s Chapel, to pray the Rosary before her, and to entrust your petitions to Our Blessed Mother. In the days leading up to the Feast of the Holy Rosary, a petition book will be placed in the chapel, where you may lovingly write your intentions and commend them to her maternal care.

As September draws to a close, we stand on the cusp of the Month of the Holy Rosary (October) —ready to honour Our Lady with renewed devotion.

Aspecial devotional initiative will take place at the Lady’s Chapel in St. Edmund’s. A petition book will be available for parishioners to write their personal intentions to Our Lady of the Rosary of La Navál de Manila, a Marian title especially venerated in the Philippines and among seafarers. Given Southampton’s own deep maritime heritage, this devotion holds particular meaning. Once the book has been prayerfully filled with intentions, it will be sent to the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Navál in Quezon City, where Dominican brothers and religious will offer prayers for all the intentions submitted. (The Petition Book will be available in the Lady’s Chapel by 7 October - Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary).

A framed picture of the miraculous image of Our Lady of La Navál together with a piece of the vestment from that miraculous image will be placed at the side altar for the duration of the month, along with prayer cards and booklets to aid in personal devotion. These include prayers for the sick, for expectant mothers, and for those at sea—reflecting miracles historically attributed to Our Lady under this title.

All are warmly invited to take part in this beautiful opportunity to grow in Marian devotion and entrust their intentions to Our Blessed Mother.
