Southam is a village in The Cotswolds, located nr Cheltenham Racecourse, just outside of Cheltenham. It features a 12th century church The Church of the Ascension which is located right next to a 14th century Tithe Barn, in the centre of the village. Unfortunately, Southam does not have a village pub or village green, but it does have a 16th Manor House, which is now The Ellenborough Park Hotel -
one of the finest hotels in the country and probably the finest in The Cotswolds. It is a rural community of approximately 300 houses and a few businesses, including a farm of both arable and live produce. The location of Southam is quite remarkable. Nestled beneath Cleeve Hill, which at a little over 1,000 feet above sea level, is the highest point of The Cotswolds. You can walk in any direction from Southam and immediately find yourself in open countryside. Wander up the hill and you will find the Cotswold Way and the start of the western part of the Cotswold escarpment. Wander west and you hit the railway line of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, still running steam train today from Cheltenham Racecourse and soon all the way to Broadway in Warwickshire. You can hear the train and whistle throughout the village, very cool. Head South West a little and you hit the back of Cheltenham Racecourse, the finest hunt race track in the world, hosting the Cheltenham Festival and Gold Cup. Each Festival period sees the village hall turn in to the Gold Cup Cafe, where to can park your car, grab a bite to eat and grab a hot drink - before and after the races, avoiding traffic. Heading South for a mile takes you to Prestbury, the most haunted village in Britain. Here you will find the closest pub, The Plough, a rather quirky and unique pub, with a huge pub garden and Boules pitch. The Southam Village hall, also has a Boules Pitch and incidentally also a monthly pub night, The Southam Arms, with a licensed bar for locals. Head North and you reach our neighbouring village, Woodmancote. Southam is a wonderful and friendly community, very welcoming and open, there are frequent fund raising activities to maintain the village hall and raise money for good causes - you can find out more by liking this FaceBook page.
