A few days ago I was trying to light our firepit for a spring BBQ. The coal was damp and despite my increasingly determined efforts, nothing seemed to work. Firelighters, matches, paper, kindling — I tried everything. The flames would flicker into life for a few moments, only to fade away again, leaving little more than smoke and disappointment.

After about twenty minutes I was ready to give up. “Stick the oven on!” I shouted to Vicky. The electric oven was easier. Simpler. Predictable. No waiting. No effort. Just flick a switch and the heat arrives.

But while she switched it on, I found myself having one final attempt. I bent down and blew on the coals. Then blew again. I grabbed a piece of cardboard and started fanning them. More blowing. More fanning. More blowing. In fact, I carried on until I felt slightly faint and there were spots before my eyes.

Then suddenly, everything changed.

The fire erupted. Flames burst through the damp coals. Heat filled the air. What had seemed lifeless moments earlier was now blazing with enough fire to cook the entire BBQ. The oven was switched off, and dinner was cooked over a living fire.

As I stood there watching those flames dance, I couldn’t help but think about the Church.

How often do we become weary of tending the fire? We pray for a while but see little change. We seek God but feel no immediate breakthrough. We believe for revival, miracles, salvations and fresh encounters with His presence, yet the coals seem damp and unresponsive. Eventually we become tempted to settle for what we can manufacture ourselves.

We switch on the oven.

We rely on better systems, slicker presentations, stronger branding, more polished programmes and increasingly sophisticated methods. None of these things are wrong in themselves, but they can never replace the fire of God. The danger comes when we become content with activity rather than anointing, crowds rather than disciples, efficiency rather than dependency, religion rather than revival.

The oven is easier.
The fire requires patience.

Yet throughout Scripture and Church history, God has always been drawn to those who refuse to stop blowing on the coals. Elijah rebuilt a broken altar before the fire fell. The disciples waited in prayer before Pentecost came. The Wesley brothers prayed. The Salvation Army prayed. Charles Finney prayed. The Welsh Revival was birthed in prayer. The Hebrides Revival emerged from persistent intercession. Again and again, ordinary believers kept tending what appeared to be dying embers until Heaven answered with fire.

Perhaps today you feel as though your prayers are producing only smoke. Perhaps you’ve been believing for a prodigal son or daughter, a breakthrough in your family, a healing, a fresh move of God in your church, or a renewed passion in your own heart. Don’t quit too soon.

The breakthrough may be closer than you think.
The fire may be nearer than it appears.

One more prayer. One more act of obedience. One more moment in His presence. One more breath upon the coals.

Keep praying. Keep seeking. Keep believing. Keep blowing on the fire.

Because sometimes the difference between smoke and flames is just one more breath.

Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration

Today I declare that the fire of God burns within me and will not go out (Leviticus 6:13). I will seek the Lord with all my heart and I will find Him as I pursue His presence (Jeremiah 29:13). I ask, seek and knock with confidence, knowing my Father hears and answers prayer (Matthew 7:7-8). I will not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time I will reap a harvest if I do not give up (Galatians 6:9). The Spirit of God is at work within me, empowering me beyond my natural strength (Philippians 2:13). I am being filled afresh with the Holy Spirit and carrying His fire into the world around me (Acts 1:8; Ephesians 5:18).

If this devotional has encouraged you today, please share it with a friend, your family, your church, or on social media. Someone you know may be just one breath away from breakthrough.

“A time is coming when My children will be known for their faithfulness to truth telling. This will require a deeper understanding of My Word, conviction to follow My strategies and trust that My Holy Spirit will empower and equip you,” says the Spirit of the Lord.

“I require you to shine My light in dark places, to speak boldly in crooked assemblies, to stand and oppose disinformation and to correct that which sounds plausible but which is actually misrepresentation.

‘Before I release resources and revelation, I must set the bar for obedience to truth telling. Just as I did in the times of Isaiah the prophet, I will make justice the measuring line, and righteousness the plumb line. I will keep short accounts with you so that the enemy may not gain a foothold.

Do not fall for the world’s interpretation of truth. My truth is what is true. It is higher and holy. It is rooted in My character and love. It brings life, not compromise. It is trustworthy.”

Activation: Take an honest inventory of your personal truth journey. Ask Holy Spirit to reveal any falsehoods you have believed. Repent of times where you have used untruths to control or get out of situations. Make a decision today to walk as a bold truth teller for Jesus.

3 John 1:3-4 (NIV) “It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”

“My Son, Jesus, came not to be served but to serve. There is a call on the earth for the children of God to serve. Just as Jesus demonstrated what love was by laying down His life for us, so you are called to lay down your life for others. In doing so, you demonstrate your love for Me,” says the Spirit of the Lord.

“Remember Me, your first love, and choose this day whom you will follow. Will you serve your own self-interests, looking for praise and appreciation from other people? Or will you love Me by serving others with no strings attached, expecting nothing in return?

Hear Me in this: there is no higher call than My servant. When you serve Me by heeding My voice and doing as you see Me do, you are most like Jesus. You show a broken, lonely world afflicted by fear, what love truly looks like.”

Activation: Ask Jesus who He wants you to serve today, and how to serve them. Then do what He says. Thank Lord Jesus for the honour of serving Him, and for the privilege of knowing Him and the Father in this way.

Matthew 20:28 (ESV) “…even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

“My beloved, gaze at the rushing waters of the river of life, flowing from the throne of God. As you look into this heavenly water, bright as crystal, ask My Holy Spirit to help you see where impurities of your heart and mind are still hindering your progress,” says the Spirit of the Lord.

“Esther spent twelve months in preparation before meeting with the king, being groomed with oil of myrrh and perfumes. Just like Esther was prepared, allow Me time with you, cleansing and preparing your heart and mind. Surrender to My purification, for it is for a greater purpose.

Indeed, I am preparing you to come up higher for there are deeper truths I long to share with you. Allow me to ready you before you step into the My heavenly throne room. For I long for a deeper relationship with you.

Don’t miss out on this crucial part of your journey by rushing past this process. Actively pursue spiritual purity, and let your heart be cleansed and prepared. Step into fear of the Lord. Be secure in My promises and grow in righteousness and reverence.”

2 CORINTHIANS 7:1 (NKJV) Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

“You are more than how you see yourself. Don’t just embrace your call, know your identity in Me. For your call will stretch and transform throughout your life, but your identity will always stay rooted in Me,” says the Spirit of the Lord.

“Allow yourself to be stretched beyond how you see yourself right now. For I, the Lord, know the plans I have for you, and I will always push you beyond the version of yourself you see today.

The way your call is walked out will change throughout your life, but one thing will stay constant - I will always want a relationship with you, intimacy with you, and encounter with you.

Embrace Me pushing you beyond the singular gift you always use. I want you to become like Me, to be modeled and molded like Jesus. To be a child of God who does what the Father shows them.

As I stretch you beyond your limits, you will look more like Jesus every day and radiate Jesus even more than the call on your life. You are an ambassador of Christ!

John 5:19 (NIV) Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.”

“In these turbulent days, I call those who will rise into their wild pioneering identities and be prepared to move without the worldly reassurances that may have come in the past,” says the Spirit of the Lord.

“Know that I Am your Reassurance. I Am your covenant keeper. I Am the Holy One of Israel, the Lion of Judah, your faithful Shepherd and heavenly Father, whose everlasting arms constantly hold you.

I ask you to break dependencies that have distracted you and held you back from My high call. Launch out in a way you may have not experienced before. It will be different for each of you. Which is why I ask you to pause and take inventory of your heart. What is it that takes up the most space in your mind and heart? What is a rival to My voice calling for your attention?

The distractions may not be what you have imagined. For it’s not always the obvious that are the detours of this world. Often that which is labelled ‘good’ can divert us from that which is from God.

Clear your mental diary. Put Me in first place in your heart. For in Me is where you will find your true security. It is from this secure foundation in Me, that I am taking you out into the deep, where you will discover real treasure and partner with Me in the thrill of the catch.”

Luke 5:4 (NKJV) 'When he had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, 'Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.'

RECALIBRATE YOUR LIFE
“You are like a fine watch in My hand. I want to calibrate you so that you stay in sync with Me. We are in the season of rapid shifts and you need to stay in step with My Holy Spirit. It’s time for your next level of refinement,” says the Spirit of the Lord.

“First, we must clear out the dust accumulated inside your life. Release and clear out small things, such as projects, busy work, and even small worries that take up too much energy and have gotten you out of harmony with Me.

‘Next bring your daily study of my Word into unity with My spiritual instructions. This synchronization will lead to sharpened hearing of My voice. Allow all your spiritual senses to come alive and in alignment with Me.

Lean into the oil of My Holy Spirit in your life. A life saturated with Holy Spirit oil allows everything to run smoothly. So make sure you get fresh oil every day.

I invite you to sit with Me to recalibrate your life. It’s time for your refinement tune-up, so that you remain in step with Me.”

Activation: Ask the Lord what distractions you need to remove from your life. Ask what changes you need to make to your daily devotion time with Him. Invite both the Word of truth and the Holy Spirit to operate in harmony in your life.
Galatians 5:25 (ESV) “If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”

SHARPEN YOUR DISCERNMENT
“It’s time to sharpen your discernment. To see things as they truly are, for not everything is what it seems on the surface,” says the Spirit of the Lord.

I saw in the spirit a hillside covered in trees. Most of the trees were still bare from their winter rest. Some had the beginning signs of new growth, spring buds starting to spring forth.

And some of the trees looked luscious and green, covered in leaves. But as I looked closer, the Lord showed me that the leaves did not belong to the tree. For the tree was in fact already dead. Ivy snaked around the lifeless trunk and along the branches, giving an illusion of life.

“In this season, things are not what they seem. It’s important that you look closer and use the gift of discernment of spirits to know what is alive in Me and what is not. Do not allow illusion to mislead you,” says the Spirit of the Lord.

‘Ask for My wisdom and discernment, and so that you are not deceived. See new beginnings from Me and allow the promise of life to come to fill your heart. Stay close to Me and know My heart is for you, always.”

James 1:16-17 (NIV) “Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

GOD OF RESTORATION

I saw Father God sitting in a large chair in the spirit, steadily weaving silver thread into a large tapestry. Joy and peace radiated from Him. The tapestry represented the story of so many lives while the silver thread signified His redemption in those stories.

“I am bringing redemption to the lives of My Sons and Daughters,” says the Spirit of the Lord. “I am restoring joy and freedom where trials and difficult seasons have overwhelmed.
I am restoring hope and vision for the coming days.
I am restoring relationships and finances that the enemy has stolen.
I am restoring health and strength where the enemy has worn out the saints.
I am restoring prodigal sons and daughters to their families and loved ones.

Even though there have been times of suffering, trial and loss, declare with your whole heart, ‘I know that My Redeemer lives!’ Wait with faith and expectation, watch and see what I will do.”

Activation: Reflect on Scripture which speaks of God’s redemptive purposes. Give thanks for His goodness and mercy. Choose a verse which speaks to your situation and declare it over your life with faith in the days ahead.

Psalm 103:2-5 (NIV) “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
