Thought for the weekend - Pentecost: God's Holy Spirit communicates with us
Last Sunday was Pentecost and we celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit, who lives not in buildings but in ordinary people's hearts and who empowered the disciples to speak of Jesus' death and resurrection in many languages.
Prior to the coming of God's Holy Spirit the disciples were locked behind closed doors; but as the presence of God rested on each of them, they began to change - they were emboldened and enlivened and so they went out and shared the wonderful news of Jesus and the new way of life following him.
For me the miracle of Pentecost is that all could hear about the love of God in words they could understand and recognise. And the enduring miracle of Pentecost is not so much the fire and wind, but the fact that God continues to draw close to those who need to hear his reassuring love that saves us and gives us hope.
I had a small experience of the Holy Spirit at work only this week. I was helping someone to locate the graves of her baby siblings in Holy Evangelists churchyard. They had each only lived a matter of days and had died in the early 1960s. This woman, who now lived in Australia, only had a short time frame in which to find where they were, so together we looked outside and scoured the graveyard plan plus several books from the safe in the Vestry, but alas to no avail.
Nevertheless we went outside and I prayed words of God's comfort and hope.
We said our goodbyes but on returning to the vestry, as I was putting the many books back, an A4 letter slipped out of the pile, and I was amazed to see that it was a letter written by the the mother of this lady to the then vicar, mentioning her 4 children and donating a sum of money for the life of the church.
I locked up, rushed out of the church and ran to the nearby bus stop where she was, calling out that I had a gift from God for her! The lady was thrilled to read the letter, penned by her own mum, speaking with such love for her siblings that she never knew. In that moment of grace, I believe the Holy Spirit was communicating with her in ways she could understand about her family and how her visit hadn't been unseen or in vain.
The work of the Holy Spirit is in our everyday as well as pinnacle moments and always reconnects us with the Father heart of God. Love is our direction of travel as we follow him.
