Dear friends

Last Sunday I had the joy of visiting the South Gillingham parishes at St Matthew's Wigmore as they marked the start of the Season of Creation. What a warm welcome I received, and how wonderful to share with other congregations in prayer, worship and praise! We begin our observance of this special time tomorrow when we gather as The Six at All Saints' Iwade for an outdoor service.
At St Matt's we watched a wonderful video by David Attenborough called How to Save Our Planet. Beautiful, disturbing and ultimately inspiring; I do urge you to watch it if you are able. The link is below the image. After all, we must surely give thanks for the beauties and abundance of God's creation while facing up to our responsibilities. More on that subject tomorrow!

George Hulme will be preaching and providing the challenge we need, and we will be celebrating the confirmation of seven candidates from All Saint's Iwade, who are making their confirmation promises before Bishop Rose at Minster Abbey later today. Do pray for them.

Our worship tomorrow, for the beginning of the Season of Creation is:

Please do come along - bring a chair - and meet those who will be newly confirmed. Parking is available at The Woolpack; please park on the far side, away from the pub, and share cars if possible - fewer cars to park, and better for the environment!

Then next Saturday, 12th September, there is a coffee morning at St Mary Magdalene Stockbury from 10am to noon, porch sale at St Mary's Upchurch and the Friends of Kent Churches Ride and Stride.
As well as the usual sponsored ride, where participants visit as many churches as possible, this year we have a NEW activity: come to St Margaret’s Church Lower Halstow and take part in the ‘Ride and Stride Treasure Hunt’ - find the six churches in our Benefice and answer the questions around The Brickfield. £3/question sheet.

Dear friends
I had the joy of being at a concert with the twins (they are two now...) at Lenham Tithe Barn this morning. Bach to Baby is a wonderful organisation which puts on classical concerts for families with very young children. Harpist Jean Kelly had them mesmerised; children are given the freedom to dance, roam about and generally revel in the wonder of live music. Watching the children today made me reflect on how constrained we become as adults in our responses to so much in life. How do we express our joy, our sadness? (Unless of course we are football fans, who seem to have no such hang-ups!) How might we respond to the abundance of blessings God has heaped upon us? The children this morning had no worries about people watching them sway, wander, dance and respond unselfconsciously to the beauty of the music.
One response to God's love is to make a public profession of our faith, and seven members of the All Saints' congregation will be doing just that at Minster Abbey next Saturday when they are confirmed by Bishop Rose. They have all completed an Alpha course, run by John and Kim Guest, and are ready to claim faith in God for themselves in front of friends and family. And words will be used which are among my favourite:
God has called you by name and made you his own
Each of us is made unique and precious, and we are all invited to respond to God's call and receive, as the Bishop will pray for our candidates, the enabling gift of the Holy Spirit. Please pray for them as they prepare for this important step along their journey of faith.

Many of us have enjoyed the music of the UK Paper Band over the years, and last year they played for All Saints' Iwade's carols by candlelight and played a concert at St Mary's Newington. They are performing at the Avenue Theatre on 6th September - see the poster for details.

Dear friends

L'Arche is an intentional faith community of people with and without learning disabilities; their aim is to challenge preconceptions around disability and provide support in communities.

Two families close to the hearts of many in The Six have been part of L'Arche over many years. Hugh and Lizzie Nelson and their family were resident members of L'Arche before Hugh's ordination, and Liz and Phil Cox's daughter Emma was a loved member of the Canterbury L'Arche for more than 20 years. L'Arche supports learning disabled and autistic adults, through a mix of residential and home support and activity programmes.
Rev Liz has been helping out with services in The Six for the past few months; many of you will know her from when she was part of our team before spending several years ministering in Gillingham. Now retired, we are thrilled to have her back with us one Sunday a month. The candle workshop was Emma's special place, and now Liz helps out in that same workshop every week. Liz and Phil treasure the love and care which supported Emma for so many years, which continued in her final months; when Emma could no longer go to L'Arche, they would visit her at home with activities and music therapy. 'They are very close to our hearts,' says Liz.
Liz and Phil are having a fundraiser for L'Arche at their home at 36 Windsor Drive, Sittingbourne on Thursday 24th September between 12 and 2. There will be refreshments and a range of crafts produced by L'Arche for sale. It's an opportunity to support this amazing organisation in their ongoing work of rooting holistic care in love and faith.

Dear friends

I hope you are all managing to stay comfortable in this heat - and keeping fresh water available in your gardens for the wildlife! The current heatwave is deeply worrying, and it is tempting to think there is nothing we can do in response. But we must not be passive. The organisation Green Christian speaks of 'responding to the cry of the earth in a way that is faithful, meaningful and, we hope, joyful.' They have circulated the prayer below, and I would urge you to use the prayer as a starting point for your own prayer and ponderings on this deeply worrying situation.
